    Bless all rescue dogs everywhere. Their presence at the 9/11 atrocity in New York was a Godsend to the men and women who had the terrible task of searching for those victims who might still be alive.

    On September 11, 2001, Apollo was set to receive an award for excellence. Instead, the NYPD German Shepherd and his handler, Officer Peter Davis, raced to the World Trade Center.

    They arrived fifteen minutes after the South Tower fell, the first search dog on scene. Smoke filled the air, and the ground was unstable, soaked from the fi*efighting.

    Apollo fell into a hole be*eath the debris. A fireball erupted around him, singeing his fur and tearing his paws on broken concrete. Davis brushed the embers off, and Apollo went right back to work.

    For weeks, Apollo searched the wreckage up to eighteen hours a day, helping find survivors and remains, alongside roughly 300 dogs at Ground Zero.

    In 2002, Apollo received the Dickin Medal, the highest award for animal bravery, called the animals equivalent of the Victoria Cross, accepted on behalf of every dog who served after 9/11.

    Apollo lived until 2006, remembered as a leader of the NYPD K9 unit and one of the first heroes to answer the call.
