Myth of the Good Old Days

I don’t know if you have noticed the Boomer bashing lately on social media, but I’m already tired of it, particularly because what is being said about “the good old day” of the the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970’s is just plain not true.

John Stossel has the facts:

Nostalgic memes spread misleading messages, like: “Once, families could own a home & send their kids to college on one income.” But the homes were smaller. Most kids didn’t go to college. The memes ignore facts.

I don’t know about you, but we always lived in a small house or apartment, no air conditioning, one bathroom, one car. I did rent an apartment for a while in the 1980’s that had a half bath and A/C, but the A/C was broken about half of the time.

Just saw some guy on X say that there aren’t any small “starter” houses available now. Heck, I still live in one!

He is right about all of that. And, we didn’t have $1000 I-phones that had to be replaced every year or so. In the late 50’s and 60’s, we lived in a 1200 sq. ft. house with no air conditioning until the 60’s. We rarely went out to eat except occasionally at Morrison’s Cafeteria, and that was after my mom started working. We didn’t fly anywhere and our vacations were to drive to our relatives in Tennessee. I bought a house in 1970 got $20,000 and it was a tiny place. Also, my two friends in Florida bought houses about the same time and they cost around $16,000 and were very tiny. One is still in the house she bought back then. We all were making under $8,000 a year.
