Here’s my cheery back to school thought of the day. We walk around everywhere with people who do not understand that 1/8 is bigger than 1/16. And they breed, and they vote, and they are lawyers and probably, some of them, teachers.
Trust me on this, I know. When I worked at Home Depot, people would fight me all the time on fractions when they wanted glass cut or window screens ordered. You finally have to show them on a tape measure, then…they get mad at you.

I grew up on the Farmer’s Market. My dad had a wholesale produce business there, year round. One fine day in the summer, the truck farmers would start rolling in and back up to the curbs, staying there on the market until all their produce was gone. This picture was from 1957, the year before I was born. And it didn’t change at all, looked just like that in my memories.
Sometimes Daddy would buy a crop of peaches and rent one of the stalls, it would be my job to man it and sell the peaches for however long they lasted. I was probably 10ish when this started. Maybe a year older. Reckon that might be one reason I got good at math.
It was locally known as the Curb market because of those long concrete curbs. The wholesalers had buildings on the end of the market and all these stalls would mostly be empty but for a few months a year. It was a crazy few months though.
I know that farmers markets are popular again. I find most of them full of upscale expensive stuff, with little actual produce. Back then, almost all the wives came down, husband and kids in tow, and man, they ran the show. The husband would tote bushels of corn, 30# tomato boxes, and whatever bags of squash, okra, green beans, field peas, onions, peaches, strawberries, melons, and any number of other goods, the wife could pack into their trunk, pickup, or station wagons. When they left, you knew that woman was going to be busy for days. And the family would eat well throughout the winter. It was just how people lived, back then.
Okra was the hot ticket item. Didn’t last long, down here.

I see, if memory serves, lots of bushel baskets, with a few pecks sitting toward the front. Then there’d be half-pecks, quarts, etc.

Did you know that the Purple Heart is America’s oldest military award? In 1782, although the Revolutionary War was basically over and peace talks were happening in Paris, Gen. George Washington needed a way to quell the talk of rebellion. Congress was running out of money after years of war against England. Troops were hungry and unpaid and there was talk of mutiny.
