Victor Davis Hanson: Donald Trump’s Trade Parity ‘Golden Age’ Explained

Adversaries and allies alike have been ripping off the United States with “asymmetrical tariffs” for decades. Now, Trump is fighting back.

“Whatever a particular country tariffs us, we reciprocate and just mirror image them. In other words, it’s their choice, not ours,” VDH says.

On this edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words,” Victor Davis Hanson explains the history behind tariffs and how other countries have taken advantage of America’s no-tariff policy for years.

“It was all predicated in the postwar period. We were so affluent, so powerful—Europe, China, Russia were in shambles—that we had to take up the burdens of reviving the economy by taking great trade deficits,” Victor Davis Hanson says.

We can’t afford to remain neutral in the trade war that’s been happening for decades.

“If tariffs are so destructive of their economies, why is China booming?” Victor Davis Hanson asks.

I’ve posted this on my FB page with a challenge to my libbo friends to take 7:00 minutes out of their day to tell me where he’s wrong. I’ll report back tomorrow if I get any lefty responses. Doubtful.

Anti-Trump hysteria here in Canada is through the roof – at least if you believe the mainstream media, and the Liberal party. We’ve got a snap election coming up, and the newly installed Prime Dictator is running against Trump. He and the media are doing everything they can to portray the Conservative leader as another Trump. Meanwhile, Trump has actually endorsed Marx Carnage.

Canada and the US have had trade wars before, but people are acting as if tariffs are this new and sudden evil thing. One of the areas we have the highest tariffs is on US dairy products – and we can’t just drop them. That’s because the Dairy Cartel (basically, Quebec) controls the prices and production of dairy. Dairy farmers have a quota. If they produce more than their quota allows, they are forced to dump the excess milk. They’re not allowed to sell it. Plus, Canada does not have free trade between provinces. It’s actually been easier to trade with the US than within Canada.

So, in order for Canadian dairy products to be competitive with US products, it’s either tariff the s*** out of them, or eliminate all price controls and quotas on Canadian produced milk and dairy products, and let farmers and producers sell as much as the market wants, and prices they will accept. That means the government has to get out of the market completely (other than the usual health and safety regulations) and end price controls.

Which isn’t going to happen. They’d rather have a tariff war.
