What’s the origin of the phrase ‘For the birds’?
Meaning: Trivial; worthless; only of interest to gullible people.
This phrase is of American origin and, while still in use there, has never been commonly used elsewhere. It is US Army slang and originated towards the end of WWII. An early example of its use is this piece from The Lowell Sun, October 1944, in an interview with a Sergeant Buck Erickson, of Camp Ellis, Illinois:
“Don’t take too seriously this belief that we have football at Camp Ellis solely for the entertainment of the personnel – that’s strictly for the birds. The army is a winner… the army likes to win – that’s the most fortunate thing in the world for America.” – phrases.org.uk

Good mornin’, Miss Wee! That makes a shiver run down my spine! For more reasons than one. I didn’t have to use one every day, but when we went to my Grandma’s house in MN, we did until I was nearly 6 years old. As they say today………Never again! Coffee’s ready, ma’am.

When I went to visit my grandparents I used to go down to my cousin’s house, I had to use the outhouse until I was in my middle teens. That would have been in the middle sixties.

My Grandma got full indoor plumbing after my Grandpa passed away. Not until 1966 and it was cold on the western MN prairies. I can vouch for that.

That area is where my hubby and I lived for 18 years, before we came out to Oregon in 2011.
We were on the open prairie about 15 miles outside of Fergus Falls – maybe you know the area….on the edge of “lake country”.
In my childhood in rural NE MT, we got indoor plumbing when I was in 4th grade (about 1954) but it was never used except for company, because every drop of water that was used in the house had been hauled in a 300 gallon tank from a spring-fed well about four miles from the farm. Water was far too precious to be regularly flushed down the toilet inside the house. I never felt mis-treated simply because I understood (and had always lived with….) the logic of the thing.
I suspect that after the last of us kids was gone from the house (when I was 14–after that I was just there in summer) that my dad not only allowed but encouraged my mother to enjoy the convenience.
Being the first one outside in the dead of winter when it’s about -20 (f) and the frost is about an inch or two thick on the rim is not for wimps, that’s for sure.

I know exactly where Fergus Falls is. My dad graduated from Elbow Lake HS. He did have water indoors but only for a sink. He was in sports all through the school year, and he admitted it was so he could take a shower after practice every day. He didn’t have electricity until about 1948. He said that anyone who talks about the good ol’ days of studying by a coal oil lamp is either a liar or they weren’t there!

Wow, Wee! That sure brings back memories. When I was in second grade, my Dad bought an unfinished house and set about putting in plumbing for the bathroom and utility room. However, in the meantime we had a 2-seater outhouse that he built. Being as the property was located in southern California we never froze but it could still get mighty cool in winter.

Yes. In the summer time, we always knew to check behind the door before we settled in with the Sears of Monkey Wards catalog for reading—and of course, it served that other basic purpose as well, doncha know.

Several guests on SNL anniversary show come down with the corona! How could that be? I’m pretty sure that most, if not all, had the jab and their full schedule of 43 boosters. Steve Martin even commented about how it might have been a good idea to have been masked. They just can’t help themselves.

And a day without grain means we’ll have to eat what instead? I read an article about grains yesterday and how einkorn wheat, emmer wheat and spelt are back in fashion. Spelt is a type of grain that is related to wheat, barley, and rye…

I’m very fond of bulgar wheat. Makes a lovely pilaf mixed 1/2 with brown rice, sautéed celery and onions, and broth.

Another grain I fairly recently started cooking is Farro. I mostly use it to make a risotto type dish; delicious with mushrooms.

Mornin’ All. Don’t know what the temp is outside, but it is definitely warmer than it has been and the snow is melting on the roof and there are puddles of water all over the parking lot. I think this is a tease for spring.

Last week Judge Nichols temporarily extended his restraining order blocking the Trump Admin from placing USAID workers on leave.
The restraining order expired on Friday and the judge declined a request for a preliminary injunction.
