History.com

On October 20, 1947, the notorious Red Scare kicks into high gear in Washington, as a Congressional committee begins investigating Communist influence in one of the world’s richest and most glamorous communities: Hollywood.

[NOTE FROM ME: A lot of those being investigated were actually Communists. We know that now.]

[. . .] In an investigation that began in October 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) grilled a number of prominent witnesses, asking bluntly “Are you or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” Whether out of patriotism or fear, some witnesses—including director Elia Kazan, actors Gary Cooper and Robert Taylor and studio honchos Walt Disney and Jack Warner—gave the committee names of colleagues they suspected of being communists.

[. . .]

Pressured by Congress, the Hollywood establishment started a blacklist policy, banning the work of about 325 screenwriters, actors and directors who had not been cleared by the committee. Those blacklisted included composer Aaron Copland, writers Dashiell Hammett, Lillian Hellman and Dorothy Parker, playwright Arthur Miller and actor and filmmaker Orson Welles.

Some of the blacklisted writers used pseudonyms to continue working, while others wrote scripts that were credited to other writer friends. Starting in the early 1960s, after the downfall of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the most public face of anti-communism, the ban began to lift slowly. In 1997, the Writers’ Guild of America unanimously voted to change the writing credits of 23 films made during the blacklist period, reversing—but not erasing—some of the damage done during the Red Scare.

[NOTE 2 FROM ME]: Senator Joseph McCarthy was (obviously) a member of the Senate, and had nothing to do with the UAC, although there has been a constant effort over the years to conflate the UAC with McCarthy.

McCarthy pursued Communists working in the U.S. government, and he was correct about many of those that he targeted. We know that because of the Venona documents. In 1995 the Venona documents – secret Soviet cable traffic from the 1940s that the United States intercepted and eventually decrypted – finally became available to American historians.

They revealed a frightening story of how deeply spies penetrated the U.S. government. There was the famous case of Alger Hiss, whose guilt as a Soviet spy is now beyond doubt thanks to Venona. Less well known, but still important, were the roles of Harry Hopkins in Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s White House and Harry Dexter White in the Treasury Department.

There can no longer be any doubt about the widespread and successful Soviet espionage operations  against the United States and Great Britain during the 1940s, and that, aside from their own  professional skill, Soviet intelligence services could count on the aid of the Communist parties of the  target countries.

Good mornin’, and Happy Sunday, the day of rest and reflection. The way things are going, it might be a good idea for all of us to learn how to make coffee on an open fire since they’re making electricity expensive and won’t let us have nice appliances anymore. Keep your head on a swivel and Carpe your coffee, y’all!

    Good Sunday, Stellars….

    Regarding the photo…

Sterling Hayden (the police captain that Michael murdered in “The Godfather”) was such a handsome young man…6’5″…he’d been a USMC 2nd Lt. during World War II in the unit which preceded the Navy SEALS and was awarded a Silver Star. He’s standing on the right and is behind Gene Kelly who is the only one we can get a clear view of wearing a hat in the photo. Gene is behind Danny Kaye. Richard Conte is front left, with Paul Henreid (“Casablanca”) behind him. I’m pretty sure the blonde woman next to Henreid is June Havoc; and the woman standing in front of the gal in the white sleeveless blouse is Jane Wyatt (“Father Knows Best”). The two in the very front look to be Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart though only the tops of their heads are visible. Most of the others look familiar but their names have left my memory bank.

I feel two ways about the work of the HUAC. It’s terrible to deprive creative people of ways to earn a living for themselves and their families in their chosen professions. That doesn’t sit well with me. Believing in communism was not against the law and still isn’t. The HUAC knew many who were called to the committee would not testify and used the threat of prison to try to get them to turn in their compatriots who they may have known from the communist cell meetings.

On the other hand, communism is beyond authoritarian and into the dictatorial, as we know. When communists take over, it’s their way or prison and potential death (think Mao and the CCP). It’s a horrible, repressive, Godless philosophy and economic system. And in 1947 many communists in the U.S. gave allegiance to the USSR. That’s the only place where treason enters the scene and that, of course, IS against the law.

I knew a number of communists (some of whom had been blacklisted) when I worked at Universal. They were screenwriters, mostly; but, frankly, I can’t think of a single film or TV episode any of them wrote which gave the advantage to the communist ideology supposedly foisted on an unsuspecting audience, though there probably were some films which “fellow travelled” and I just don’t remember them.

One of the obvious things to remember is that lefties/Marxists/communists today would put a good percentage of conservatives in prison if they could and not bat an eye. They’ve proven that with the J6 prisoners and the pro-life people put in terrible prison conditions. These lefties are within our government and are many times over more dangerous than anyone who was called to appear at the HUAC.

Normally I don’t like to link Hot Air, and I consider this author kinda the Allahpundit replacement, but good gosh, Timmy, you are a loser.

My husband says he’s trying to connect with the working class, and doesn’t know how. Boy howdy! The working class take care of their own.

My mother in law was an only child. Her mother lived with them when she got very old and needed care. My MIL died while her mother was still alive. My husbands’s siblings got together and built a room on one of his sisters’ houses and moved their grandmother in, and they all tried to help ease the burden on the caregiving sister.

Meanwhile, until his death, my father in law considered the old lady, who hated him pretty bitterly btw, his responsibility. He paid support for her from his very modest means. His daughter, also of very modest means, refused to use it and pre paid for her father’s funeral with the money he gave her.

These politicians don’t know beans about humanity and caring and even family.

I can honestly say that the year I had to sort through and make the Medicare choices was awful. One of the good things about Tennessee is that they have an excellent advocacy organization for seniors, and our doc referred us to them.

When I was at my wit’s end, they helped me select a plan that has worked well for us these several years. However, our choice of drug plan sucks and I may have to change it.

I am sure I overthought it, but we were in the middle of a lot of major surgeries, and the decision seemed so critical.

Let me know if you ever have questions. I’m licensed in 24 states……so far. Remember this…..those advocates are typically not licensed or insured, and if they operate like the rest of the government, they are not liable for any incorrect information they pass on to you. Hope everyone is aware that SSA, Medicare, IRS are not bound by what any of them ever tell you over the phone. Only if one of their attorneys is talking to one of your attorneys, is anything binding.

This is interesting; Reagan’s involvement and testimony before the HUAC.

    https://www.reaganfoundation.org/education/curriculum-and-resources/resources/reagan-hollywood-and-the-red-scare/

President Ronald Reagan was known as a staunch anti-communist. Many students are unaware that this reputation began years prior to President Reagan’s time in the White House. President Reagan began his anti-communist crusade as president, but not of the United States, instead it was the Screen Actors Guild of America.

The attached documents highlight some of the members of the motion picture industry that were asked to testify before the committee, the perception of President Reagan that was held by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), and two selections from the testimony that President Reagan gave before the Committee in 1947.

I met Roy Cohn, who was one of the lead legal eagles during all this and he was not apologetic about anything they did because they were right. I met him in ’85 just a few years before he died. He was brutalized in the press because he was gay, especially by the left because he wasn’t the right kind.

Billionaire investor says Wall Street ‘very convinced’ Trump will win 2024 election

    https://www.foxbusiness.com/media/billionaire-investor-says-wall-street-very-convinced-trump-win-2024-election

A billionaire investor and former money manager for George Soros explained why he thinks markets are “very convinced” that former President Donald Trump will win the 2024 election.

Over the last 12 days, Wall Street has seemed “very convinced Trump is going to win… You can see it in the bank stocks, you can see it in crypto,” Stanley Druckenmiller said Wednesday in a Bloomberg Television interview.

It indeed was a big week for bank stocks, as market data showed positive year-over-year indicators for Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank and JPMorgan Chase.

Additionally, a new report out Thursday from Chainalysis has found that North America dominates the crypto market globally, with an estimated $1.3 trillion on the blockchain.

[…] Turning his focus to Congress, Druckenmiller predicted that it is “extremely unlikely” for Democrats to gain control of both chambers – even if Vice President Harris is elected – and that a red sweep is “probably more likely than a Trump presidency with a blue Congress.”

I saw this earlier today and at first I thought it was a joke. It is, but it’s for real. This is the kind of shite that only bureaucrats can think up. But it follows gubmint M.O. Their job is not to help the citizens, but stop them from doing anything. Thank goodness for that pesky Bill of Rights that set forth the constraints on these idjits, not our “rights”. Not that they actually follow it. It’s not even suggestions anymore.

This cycle has totally exposed those who care and those who grift quite vividly. I haven’t heard a peep out of Gates or Bezos either one. I realize that anyone who sticks their neck out like Elon has definitely put a circle on their back, and that takes a lot of intestinal fortitude to do that. But it shows that someone who came to our Country from another one the legal way, and went through all the hoops to become a citizen probably cares more about this Country than the two I named above. We know for sure that one of ’em wants a lot of out of the way. I’m fairly confident that the other one doesn’t disagree, or we might have had an op-ed or two from his fish-wrapper of a newspaper indicating as such.
