Spiced Pecan Pie Bars should go well with Texan’s Coffee….

Give classic pecan pie bars a twist with warming spices.

    Mornin’ kids!

Beacon of hope: State Parks team made it to Chimney Rock to raise the American flag in western North Carolina.

Good mornin’, and welcome to the halfway point of the week. After an exhausting evening of watching TeeVee reporters doing their own fact-checking, I need a big snort of coffee this morning. This is actually a working contraption of the copper variety. Carpe your coffee and wait for the returns to come in from the “media” today.

Most people don’t understand the truth of this. Government actually holds back the do-ers and achievers, and spends way more.

I’ve been watching the Justin Rhodes Vlawg on YouTube, where he and his sons have been clearing woodlands for pasture and building a road to the top of their mountain.

Seems hillbillys have lots of practice. Justin lives in western North Carolina, and their farm sustained considerable damage, though fortunately not their home, and they didn’t have flooding.

Correction. They did have flooding and it pretty much took out their new pole barn.

          Latest update from Rhodes:

Rhodes Hurricane update: We’re ok but the lower farm is destroyed. Lost bees, turkeys, high tunnel, lower pasture, lower gardens, the bridge etc… came within feet of the house. There will be no power for weeks. Video posting will be delayed. Roads are closed but we have our generator with lots of fuel. Grandma and grandpa are safe and we will be able to access them by vehicle soon.

Just a note: They just finished a complete rebuild/remodel of their home and moved in last week. If they had lost that, I can’t imagine. Justin estimates there is at least $100,000 in damages, and they are the lucky ones.

          ADD: They are near Asheville.

The old-fashioned way. I just read that they also use mules to protect livestock from predators. Versatile little guys!

The ILA strike has already caused people to empty the shelves of toilet paper and paper towels. I just read we should expect to have shortages of coffee, toys and cars. Other than getting a couple of extra bags of coffee, I don’t see any problems.

National Smarties Day – do not like these. More for you…

National Walk to School Day – I never lived far enough away to qualify for bus service until my last two years of HS. Probably did me good to walk the almost 2 miles.

National Pumpkin Seed Day – I want a bigger treat for all that work…

National Coffee with a Cop Day – good idea!

National Name Your Car Day – I’ve known people who do this, but never did it or lived with someone who did.

National Custodial Workers’ Recognition Day – necessary

National Produce Misting Day – now this seems kinda silly. A day of national recognition???

National Fried Scallops Day – haven’t had any in years. Like them, but our coastal waters do not produce them, and what shellfish we have fills me up nicely.

Random Acts of Poetry Day – neat idea

I’m game for Coffee With a Cop Day since I’ve fallen in love with half the Arkansas State Police, especially the adorable 28-year-old Jacob Byrd, who is an exert in the PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuver.

Start at 8:55 for Jacob taking over primary lead, doing the PIT, followed by several different tapes from other police dash cams, and then see him later talking with all the other police. Such a sweetie!

He still projects youthful enthusiasm.  No show of cynicism…I hope that never changes.  He’s friendly, even with the perps on occasion unless they’re arrogant, entitled-acting and whiney (all three which, unfortunately, is a huge percentage of the time).  You can tell he enjoys being good at his job and seems to take accolades in stride even though he exhibits confidence in his abilities.  I bet he’s made his Mom and Dad really proud.

I saw the first comment on Twitter from someone who is supposedly a trapped homeowner who is safe, has communication, but not road in and out being contacted by Black Rock.

Can’t believe they’d be able, or willing, this early, but I left my foil cap off this morning. I don’t really know.

I’ve read hey turned away a convoy of medical professionals, and entire load of pipe to restore water in one town, helicopters, people, I’ve lost track. And most of those from very credible sources.

So, what’s the end game here? It’s time for every person able, including the 82nd Airborne to say hell with it, knock them on their asses, and go in.

    Menagerie,

Thank you for the compassionate summation of the situation of those living in the mountains of Eastern TN and Western NC.

I’m posting this link because it displays the contrast of civilian versus governmental response. As others have said, “Look for the helpers.”
