I did not know there were different meanings for the terms “fall” and “autumn”, but there are. Here’s what I found from Weather.com –

“Fall and autumn are often used interchangeably to describe the third season of the year. But did you know there’s a difference in their original meanings?

“Fall” is about leaves tumbling from trees: The term came about in the 1600s as shorter way to say “the fall of the leaves”, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary. This is probably the most straightforward of the two words because it goes hand in hand with changing colors of deciduous trees and their eventual shedding of leaves.

“Autumn” has a longer history: It was first used in the 1300s and has its roots from the Latin word “autumnus”. Autumn then replaced the word harvest to describe the time between summer and winter.

Merriam-Webster says that autumn took over for harvest because the latter word could be confusing because it referred to both the time of year crops were typically harvested and the actual task of harvesting crops.”

    The science is settled!
