When I bought my home my neighbor was a man ( widower) in his mid 70’s, and what an awesome man he was too. Then I learned his story, As a U.S. Marine he fought on five island in the South Pacific. It’s difficult without tearing up but he was and will always be the first image in my mind when the term WWII vet is mentioned.

He passed away some time ago now at the age of 96 and it hurt as much as losing my brother. They simply do not make men like them anymore.

My (21 yrs older) brother joined the Navy at age 17, and served first in the Aleutians, and then in the South Pacific on the hospital ship, USNS Comfort. It was hit by a kamikaze pilot off the shore of Okinawa. 28 were killed (including six nurses), and 48 wounded.

The point is, these young men were brave and put their lives on the line. When they came home, they were never the same. As my mother said, “He left as a boy, and came home as a man.”
