Good morning!
Continuing a conversation from yesterday about Notre Dame Cathedral, I ran across this program about the history of its design, building and rebuilding due to fire and other damage over the centuries.

Did you see this? It’s one of those terrible but funny incidents the Left gets into when they don’t pay attention to the proverb “You reap what you sow.”
Burning Lithium-Ion Battery Ship Update
By David Blackmon – January 2, 2024

The AP is reporting now that the fire caused by a cargo of 800 tons of lithium-ion batteries aboard the container ship Genius Star XI has finally been extinguished. As I reported here on December 31, the ship was originally bound for San Diego when it left port from Vietnam on Christmas day, but was rerouted to Dutch Harbor, Alaska by the US Coast Guard after it reported the fire in its cargo hold on December 28.
The ship was anchored two miles offshore as a protective measure “to ensure the fire and any toxic gases did not affect the nearby community” while firefighters struggled to extinguish the battery fire. In the end, it took five days to finally achieve that.
Through all that time, neither the AP nor any other media outlet has been willing to disclose whether these lithium-ion batteries were for use in electric vehicles.
That is all.

This article was written in November 2022, but it explains many of the difficulties in fighting a lithium-ion battery fire on a cargo ship.

I don’t recall any from our side of the aisle complaining about this latest intrusion into the piercing of the corporate veil and general PITA reporting requirements primarily from your mom and pop shops. This latest snoopy thing was inserted into the NDAA of 2021 and kicked in yesterday. Mandatory reporting of “Beneficial Ownership”.

Hello All 🙂
Here is some info on birthstones from Geology com:
Garnet is the birthstone of January. Although many people think of a red gem when they think of garnet, it is actually available in almost every color – green (tsavorite and demantoid), orange (spessartine and hessionite), purple (rhodolite), yellow (mali and topazolite), pink (malaya), red (almandine and pyrope), black (melanite). These are just some of garnet’s many colors and varieties. There are even opaque garnets that are usually cut as a cabochon (pink hydrogrossular and green grossularite). The color variety of garnet gives people born in January many color option.

I discovered a few years ago that stones are not always the color we believed our whole lives. I was sad.

The same is true of sapphires. The best known are blue, but they are many colors, including clear and black.

Don’t be sad mom. Think of it as opening up more alternatives!
Stella is right. Sapphires come in every color of the rainbow as well as ‘star’ sapphires. They are the 2nd hardest stone (a 9) to diamonds. Some stones are fragile (ex. emeralds) or soft (turquoise), or too expensive (rubies or natural blue diamonds) but there are some alternatives in other stones that are stronger and less expensive. The only stone I can think of that is one of a kind that can’t be grown in a lab to be chemically the same, or faux made to really look the same is an opal.

Emerald is my birth stone. I have “emerald” jewelry, but only one real emerald – a small one in a ring, with small diamonds. It has an inclusion, which just about all emeralds do.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Emeralds are beautiful, and yes Inclusions are common. They also can be fragile due to the chemical that makes them green being susceptible to mechanical shock. No boxing with an emerald ring on! HAHAHA! 😉 Actually, I’m a bit of a klutz in general, so it would not be a good option for me even though they are so lovely.
If anyone has an opal, make sure it gets watered – yes – get it wet and let it soak in water a little bit at least once a year. It would be good to wet it even a shorter time, but more often. They can dry out and crumble. I know someone who kept hers in a safe deposit box for years never watering it, and when taken out, it crumbled into pieces.

I’ll take personal trainer! One of our nextdoor friends is a physical therapist and personal trainer. She hasn’t been my main PT since she doesn’t take insurance, but she sure has helped me.
She came over the other night and streamlined my exercise routine, and now I do a lot less, work and stretch a lot more, and I’m getting some of the ankle therapy in the same routine. It’s hard, but needed and efficient.
For those of you who have reached retirement age, if you aren’t active, think about adopting some basic things, especially walking.
I need to lose weight, and I am very out of shape since my ankle injury because I’ve been almost immobile until the ankle replacement. Before that I was very active and pretty strong.
I see people at PT my age who can barely walk with the aid of a walker, not from injury, but weakness and inactivity. They are so weak they can barely have a starting point in therapy from which to help themselves, and you can see how much pain they are in.
Don’t let that be you! After the past three years, I can tell you, use it or lose it is truth!

This is a great place to start. Bob and Brad have so many short videos. Lots are to help your aches and pains, but you can find some good basic, easy to do exercises to start with. They are physical therapists in Minnesota.

I just subscribed, too….I went to check it out and the first video that caught my attention was the one having to do with trigger-finger.
I don’t have trigger-finger quite the way they described (that it retracts or extends and gets stuck) but what I have may in face be what occurs before the “getting stuck” symptom happens.
I’ve been doing some fairy intense crocheting for three months on a baby blanket for a new person making her entry later this month. I had noticed this issue a bit two years ago when I was crocheting for her brother’s arrival.
As I’m crochet, the finger/tendon pops, I can literally feel the tendon sliding-popping-relaxing. Ick. and yuck.
It became more frequent the longer I worked this fall and I was VERY glad to finish that project a few days ago, but their description is a perfect fit. So I already did what they share and am optimistic, yes!
This looks like a good resource. I am pretty active in the sense of being on my feet the majority most of the time so I’m not “just sitting” but that doesn’t mean there aren’t issues. Because of fibromyalgia, arthritis, and post-chemo, there are a lot of secondary things where it would be a good idea to be pushing back in a consistent way.
The post-chemo neuropathy in my hands has improved about 90% (I didn’t know if I would ever crochet again, but was able to resume about three years ago). My feet have not improved much so I take extreme measures to protect my feet and never (that’s NEVER) go barefoot, either inside or out.
Sorry for the long comment – but thanks, Menagarie. I’m glad you’re finding ways to move forward. I have known for decades that once we lose mobility, strength, etc. it’s increasingly difficult to recover it.
My ongologist and PC had both been wanting me to start fosomax (for osteopenia/osteoporsis) years ago, and I refused beause of the possible issue with dental complications. I already have enough of those. However, this past fall, when my PC suggested/encouraged it again, as the bone scan taken showed continued deterioration my bones, did some more research. The bottom line of my research was this:
The dental problem is mostly avaoidable, manageable, treatable, and rare.
The stats say that there is a 30% chance I will have a hip fracture within ten years, based on my bone scans and records of people with similar readings.
Oh. Ok. I started the fosomax–once a week for probably five years. Thanks again, people!

I’ve tried to drill this into my Dad’s noggin. I have watched what happened to him and his late wife (stepmom). They sat on their *ss and mobility is pretty much gone. I walk every day and picked back up on the resistance training – 4x/week, less than 30 minutes each session. I’m not going to look like Mr. Universe, but Mr. Texas will work just fine. You gotta move move move.

As I’m sure you know, it really takes such a little bit of time to get us what we need. Right now, my whole goal is life functionality and getting some endurance and strength back. Also, working on balance, since the ankle has that messed up.
My neighbor gave me 9 compound exercises that don’t take too long and are really challenging for me in my present recovery stage. Doing a lot with a little.
To be fair, I think these exercises would have challenged me before. I just extended my gym membership, but I can do all of these at home. Not that I don’t do other stuff there. But these actually are almost everything I need except my specific ankle stuff.
She also pointed out exercises that my husband and I have been doing at the gym that really aren’t good to do, at least at our age, and some she just doesn’t like for anyone. I guess doing almost every machine because it’s there isn’t a good plan!

My current routine is a split routine. Four exercises one day, five the next. One day off, repeat cycle. Two days off. Start over on Monday morning. Very basic. Functional movements for the most part. I have two basic thoughts. One – keep from falling. Two – if I fall, be able to get off the floor.

Afternoon All. Almost 30* and overcast and foggy. Also, it is snowing lightly. I have to admit it is a bit on the yucky side today.
I may have solved the bad dream situation. I woke up this morning and what popped into my head was that Loki has acted weird when eating a few times. I thought at first she had see a bug or something. But, a few days ago she was eating and then jumped away from her dish and ran and hid and then sat outside the kitchen and looked at her dish. I had a tray under her dish and it has sort of a little lattice fence around it. I thought,” what if she had caught her tongue in that lattice work and thought something bit her?” Maybe that has been percolating in the back of my mind and came forward in a dream. Lattice tray removed – problem may be solved.
Well, hope your days this week are good ones.
