That’s 54 years ago, so there are probably a couple here who were just a twinkle in their daddy’s eye.
On that date, most Americans (and many others) were watching Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon. It was a huge milestone in the “space race”, a milestone in live television, and the first telephone call between the moon and planet Earth. Remember JFK’s speech in 1961?
Now it is time to take longer strides,” he exhorted, “time for a great new American enterprise . . . . I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.”
At the time he gave this speech before Congress in 1961, NASA was not yet three years old. Six years later, we were there. Considering the state of technology at the time, it was a bloody miracle!

A different time, really. Politics back then was a tad different than politics today! America was a helluva lot more united than today! That was a lot closer to the old saying of that’s not your dad’s Democrat Party of today. Yea, both Party platforms had the basic America at heart. Today, President JFK could never be a Democrat! “Ask not what your country can do for you…” would never resonate with the Left of today!

It was a hopeful time. People were genuinely excited about such a venture for our country, and we were proud that our young President was fully behind it. Those were the days when memorabilia for these type of “firsts” was available on store shelves shortly afterwards and just about everyone I knew had something to remember the space flights by.
The weekend was spent watching various news programs discussing the preparations and then the landing on Sunday. Can’t recall for sure if my boyfriend viewed the landing with me or not (sorry to say he’s not all that memorable anyway…LOL!) but I think so.

Watching my younger son take his first steps….he first walked on earth the same day man first walked on the moon.

That’s a wonderful story! I was with my husband and daughter (almost 18 months old) at his aunt and uncle’s house. They had a pool and a really nice rec room, but only a b&w tv, of course!

I most certainly watched the landing. I met and spoke with Neil Armstrong for a few hours at an MLB game. My wife worked for the ball club for 20 years and the GM seated Armstrong with us. Nice man and gentleman. What was quite strange, the entire time no one came up to him to speak or ask for autograph but they did want memorabilia from most of the players on the field.
