        I took Italian in an adult ed class long ago. Turned out, when I went to Italy, all you need is your hands!! 😁

        Good day, czarina! Took an interest in Italian in the 1970s when I was dating an adorable Italian-American actor, but remember very little since I never consistently used it in daily life. In college I wanted to be different when all my friends were taking Spanish which is of actual use in California, and studied French. Don’t remember it either. A linguist I’m not.

    Afternoon all. It is still in the 60’s (on my patio in the deep shade) but the sky is perfectly clear and blue.

    I’m still working on the same things, sorting a getting ready to move. I haven’t heard from the apt complex yet, but the man in the apt is supposed to be moving out next weekend. Waiting is so hard.

    I received my new issue of Iprimis in the mail today–just an excellent speech with a lot packed in. The commencement speaker was Bishop Robert Barron (Word on Fire Catholic Ministries). Here’s a link to the current issue:

    Some excerpts:

    “Do we hunger and thirst for righteousness? Or do we seek our own advantage? In a way, there is no question in the moral and spiritual order more fundamental than that.

    “A locus classicus for studying this question is found in Plato’s Gorgias. In this dialogue, the character Gorgias is a sophist—which is to say, an expert in teaching the art of persuasive speech. Polus and Callicles are his students. Their concern is not being truthful or just but rather speaking in such a way that they appear truthful or just and hence become convincing to others. Such sophists were, obviously enough, enormously useful to prospective lawyers and politicians in ancient Greece…”

    and this from Frederick Douglass, former slave owner, in 1863:

    “There is no such thing as new truth; error might be old or new, but truth is as old as the universe.”

    I found the speech easy reading (as is almost everything coming from Hillsdale) and packed with source information, names, quotes, etc. So well done.

      Hi, Sharon! Haven’t check my mail for a few days but my copy from Hillsdale is probably in the box. I also subscribe to Hillsdale’s YouTube channel and Bishop Barron’s commencement address was posted May 17th.

      Besides reading the address, I think most folks would really be inspired at hearing this man speak.

        Thank you for posting that! I need to subscribe to their youtube channel…..

        I have been fascinated for a long time with the obvious quality of the material in Imprimis. They make very effective use of language!!

        A couple years back, I also went through a couple of the online courses. I still hope I find the gumption and focus to take their series on C. S. Lewis.

          You’re welcome, Sharon! I enjoyed several online courses offered by Hillsdale, too. Unfortunately, the commitment of so much time is not the easiest. Likely I won’t be signing up for any new courses and will just stick to viewing various YT channels which cover subjects I like.

      I really like Bishop Barron’s commentary. I’ve followed him for many years, way before he became a bishop, and even before he founded Word on Fire.

      I like to use some of his work during Advent, Lent, and Easter. Last time I did that at the Tree I got attacked, and boy do I mean attacked, by some Trad Catholics who hate him.

      In all the years of posting over at the Tree I don’t think I’ve had such vicious and hate filled remarks as I did on that post.

      I have gotten his daily Biblical commentary, a very brief few paragraphs, for years. He has a wonderful ability to really turn things upside down and make you look much deeper into what you thought you knew.
