Gulls looking for tidbits from the feeding whales. In the Great Lakes, you look for the gulls as the salmon would chase the baitfish to the surface. That gave away the feeding salmon we were after.
When it got boring due to inactivity, we would fly kites from the boat! Really different flying a kite with a fishing rod!LOL

Mornin’ Wee and all ya’all! A little hazy, don’t know if it’s clouds for a little rain later or smoke. Watering things just in case the prolonged period without rain continues.

Some interesting menu ideas…think I’ll try some recipes. They use ‘ginger-and-garlic paste’ in some stew recipes; it looks pretty easy: just equal amts of ginger root and garlic cloves blended into a paste.

I love the colorful fish….sometimes, for background enjoyment, I pull up one of those 12 hour youtube videos of ocean fish…if I don’t care for the music that accompanies it, I just kill the volume and let the video play. Then I go find the music I prefer and play that audio only (in case there’s video with it – )
And sometimes, like the other day, I also add a layer of audio of thunderstorms and heavy rain on top of the fish and the music. Endless combinations of things. My desk top is in the office, but that’s ok–visuals are not wasted. Lots of trips in here during the day and when I walk by the door I see it….
Yesterday my son and his wife took me on a four hour tour of the Willamette River. I particularly wanted to see all the bridges, from the water. Oh, my. Lots of history there as well as examples of amazing engineering. It is also Fleet Week, so lots of big military and Coast Guard vessels along th water front at one point. So enjoyable.
Because they are guarding the ships, we had more than one experience of a small Coast Guard boat, armed with a machine gun, casually coming toward us (as we were pressing far away!) to be sure we weren’t bad people. One of them got close enough, with no aggravating reasons from us–we were traveling slow and making no wake or sudden moves–they ended up close enough that my son called to them over the water, “If you’re trying to scare us, it’s working!!” with a big smile and they smiled back. Pretty impressive stuff. I’m sorry about their CIC, but I like them.
Here is one of the things we saw along the way:

This footage was taken on Saturday when they were in trial heats, but the visuals were exactly the same yesterday. Portland truly has a wonderful history going back well over a century. You sure won’t see anything beautiful at street level, but between the bridges, the Dragon boats, Fleet Week, the kayakers and sailboats, all of the natural beauty (in additional to a stunning skyline) I felt like I got to touch base a bit with what used to be.
The first time I was in Portland was when I was in grade school–we were taking the train to Los Angeles for Christmas to visit my sister. Our connection from the Empire Building (from Montana) and then the passenger train down the coast to LA was in Portland. We stayed overnight with some old Navy friends of my dad’s (from his service in WW I). Portland was beautiful. Just like Minneapolis was when I lived there in the very early 1960s.
Here are random photos (not current) from Fleet Week. Very fun to see from the water.

Good story! Dragon boats look expensive, but maybe not when shared by all those people. Nice there is still a way to enjoy Portland (last I was there was 1981).

They actually have sponsors (7-11, UPS, etc) for each boat. Each company flies their little corporate flag on the end of the boat.

I think the boats are all owned by some central organization, and then teams make application and get assigned one of the boats….probably a project of some Chinese/Asian business organization or something…I dn’t know.o
