I’m not much of a comic book connoisseur, and none of my grandkids are that I know of, but this “woke” world they all live in has seemed to have jumped the shark if you ask me. This is just bizarre. Top o’ the mornin’ to y’all.

Vaxxes for thee, but not for me…………sort of. Illegal kids don’t need vax records or anything else to go to US schools, but our kids do. Getting fed up yet?

Apparently the Chicago parents are a little slow on the uptake–probably assuming that all things, forever, going forward would be just as they wanted them to be? Dunno. But apparently they haven’t been paying much attention to reality.

I’m WAY past “compassion fatigue” for the late wakeups. It’s no longer a matter of “better late than never”. The out-of-touch-with-reality gang are the ones who have greased the skids for the destruction of our Republic.

Afternoon, All. It is almost 60* and very pleasant with an overcast sky so far. Lovin’ this weather.

I have been having trouble with my tub draining. I got one of those things you stick down in the drain and pull out the hair that has gotten stuck. No matter how much I worked it didn’t seem to make much difference and actually was getting worse all the time. I had tried to find instructions on YouTube, but didn’t get the right ones until yesterday. So, I found out how to get the stopper out and started cleaning it out. I would never have made any headway without pulling that stopper out. There were a few tiny pieces of childrens’ toys caught in there. So, I think it will be all right now, but I am not putting the stopper back in until I move. I always take a shower, not a bath.

Now I am wondering about the sink drain. It smells and I can’t seem to make much difference to it. I wonder if there is something in the trap, although I don’t know how it could be. I will have to have my son come over to fix that. I am certain I couldn’t get the trap open myself. That is the next job.

Hope you have a nice weekend.

Stella, I love the photo of the china cup and saucer! I have my mother’s entire collection of such beauties. During the 1950s, there were finally decent crops which made it possible for my parents to do quite a bit of traveling–to both east and wet coat and points in between. Always by car and always with historical sites and photograph-able nature sites/national parks, etc in mind when routes were determined.

Every one of those trips ended with mom bringing back a beautiful bone china cup and saucer from one of the outstanding places they visited. In the years to follow, until she broke up housekeeping, she used them always for the frequent coffee parties she would have with her ten sisters–whether there were 3 of them meeting together locally, or everyone gathered in for reunion.

They are all sitting in the secretary/china display in the dining room. I’m trying to think what to do with them next….getting ready for a potential, major move here and I suppose there actually is a point where a wise person will identify when it’s time to stop dragging stuff around the country. It is yet to be determined whether I am that wise person. I’ve been the family archivist for decades and now my one brother and I are the only ones left. Will be interesting to see what happens with those beauties.

One granddaughter may be interested, but I need to figure that out yet–I don’t want to foist things like that on to someone unless there is real interest. She thinks I’m the neatest grandma ever, and I don’t want her to take them just because of that.

Hi Sharon! I also have several of my mother’s “fancy” cups and saucers in my china cabinet. I also have a china mug that she gave me that has the same lily of the valley design as the one on the pictured cup and saucer! (I’m a May baby) ADD: They are both Royal Albert.

My mother gave away most of her things before she left this earth, fortunately for me. Not so fortunately is that she gave much of it to me, and some to my daughter.

PS: I also have a Royal Albert Centennial Rose cream and sugar set with a china tray. I received that as a wedding gift from a friend of mine. I really enjoy looking at all of them.

My mother’s collection includes at least two lily-of-the-valley sets. She carried a little bouquet of that on her wedding day in 1926–wild ones from the prairie way up in Sheridan county, NE corner of MT. (Their small pioneer home was about 5 miles from the Canadian border.)

My mother started passing out cups and saucers from her collection in the years before she died. She gave each of her many nieces and grandnieces one and I don’t know who else. That left me with about 20. It is obvious I have to do some more extreme downsizing and I am trying to figure out what to do with what I have left. I would love to save some for my granddaughters, but I have no place to store them until they grow up.

Sharon, my granddaughter and I were looking through the spare closet for something the other day, and she found some of the stuff I saved for her. I have crystal champagne and and wine glasses from my great grandmother. It’s just so tissue thin, and the etching on it is lovely. I used to know the brand and pattern, but I’ve long since forgotten.

She fell in love with it, and was so excited to know that it’s hers, along with some hand sewn old, old quilts, doll blankets, and a few other things. I’m fortunate because she’s a collector at heart, and a lover of beauty and all things feminine. I don’t have a lot to burden her with, just enough, I hope, for her to cherish and pass on.

I used to have those treasures on display in the cabin, but I kept the most precious and boxed them away when we moved. This house is a haven for wild and rambunctious grandchildren, and I never wanted it to be a place where I had to worry about and tend to delicate glassware.

What a good event to cherish!–passing on well loved treasures to someone happy to have them! My mother disposed of many things by the time she was in her 70s–and many things she didn’t–precious, irreplaceables, documents back to the 1800s and going forward–she passed them out to my siblings, but as they got older (and all gone now except one) THEY all passed whatever they had received along to me….so I’m having to do a resort and redistribution.

Much of it I have already done, but there was so much to begin with. It’s all good. I’m blessed with a fine heritage and with treasures that speak of that heritage.

Oh, you describe that old etched glass—I had a large set of that in what we called sherbet/dessert dishes…about 5″ high with intricate etchings of leaves, etc. and an intricately designed stem. Those I was able to pass on to my dear granddaughter a couple years ago, and she was thrilled to have them….maybe she will be thrilled to have the cup and saucer sets!!! I don’t know how much she could actually use them, but she and her hubby and extended family are definitely “all about family” and all kinds of history, so maybe………….

I could have easily left out my earlier reference to a “major relocation”, of course, but I’ve known about this for several months now and it needs to become part of normal conversation for me.

My income is not adequate for maintenance/updates in a 55 year old house. My son and DIL (and a group of dear friends….) have already gifted me with many thousands of dollars in necessaries over the years and, frankly, there’s no end in sight. They are very generous with their time, money, and labor; however, we agree that it’s a sound choice that I relocate to where living expenses are significantly less. ….and the dog and my car go with me….both of those are a big deal and a blessing! My Colorado son and family are supportive and glad to be part of all this as well.

My granddaughter, her husband*, my great-grandson (10 months old) live in Montgomery, AL and are beyond excited that I will be their neighbor. (*and his huge, close-by, extended family)

Son and DIL are there this week as initial real estate evaluations continue. My house here is insanely valuable at this point–easily listable for more than three times what we paid for it in 2011. Of course, it may not sell for that, but it will be in that neighborhood…I don’t have the strength to go into all the good details…but they are good.

It may be anywhere from 6-15 months before this move happens. There are lots of moving parts, but I’ll be 80 next spring, so if we’re gonna do this, we better get started. I think it’s one of those things that will develop gradually–and then happen suddenly….I’m trying to lean forward in terms of practical things that I can do now, so that when it’s GO TIME, it’s as easy as possible for everyone involved. Family will totally escort me there and get me settled when the time comes.

You are so family-blessed, Sharon. Yes, Oregon property tax laws alone make an exit for retirees inevitable! I can only imagine what that tax is for you now in the Wilamette Valley.
I can say, personally, that memories move with you so are always close.
This is exciting, and you will always be our neighbor at Stellas’s!
