NIS, SERBIA – THE LAYERS OF HISTORY
Nis is not only the third largest city in Serbia, but also a place of great historical importance. Several layers of history can be found beneath the streets of Nis, some dating 5000 years back. In Nis and its vicinities there are tens of historical monuments and artifacts that tell the story of a flourishing city with key role both during the Roman times, the Ottoman rule and nowadays.

The origin of the name “Accursed Mountains” is disputed. According to one local legend, the devil escaped from hell and created the jagged glacial karsts in a single day of mischief. Others say a woman cursed the mountains while she and her children trekked through them on a scorching-hot day and couldn’t find any water. A third legend claims Slavic soldiers gave the mountains their name as they struggled to march through them.[2]

Thanks for looking that up, czarina! All the Balkan countries have fascinating histories and tales. Their time as part of the Roman Empire is particularly interesting and many have ruins which aren’t closed off but can be toured right down in the midst of the fallen columns, etc. What fun it would be to visit.
