The Way through the Woods

by Rudyard Kipling

They shut the road through the woods
Seventy years ago.
Weather and rain have undone it again,
And now you would never know
There was once a road through the woods
Before they planted the trees.
It is underneath the coppice and heath,
And the thin anemones.
Only the keeper sees
That, where the ring-dove broods,
And the badgers roll at ease,

There was once a road through the woods.
Yet, if you enter the woods
Of a summer evening late,
When the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools
Where the otter whistles his mate,
(They fear not men in the woods,
Because they see so few.)

You will hear the beat of a horse’s feet,
And the swish of a skirt in the dew,
Steadily cantering through
The misty solitudes,
As though they perfectly knew
The old lost road through the woods.
But there is no road through the woods.

Today is a bit sunshiny, 40 degrees just now, and supposed to be dry….finally…and wet weather returning tomorrow. I hope that the lawn is dry enough by this afternoon to take the top inches off. It’s either that or rent-a-goat time. With all the rain in early spring, it can get a interesting trying to keep the lawn looking decent. It’s growing so fast and there’s not enough predictably dry weather to be able to keep it trimmed.

Mayor Pete is having another bad day.

Between trains and planes and barges, the recent escalation of major transportation problems seems to speak of incompetence or cumulative lack of maintenance.

But it’s all good, I guess. Louisville Water is assuring everybody the water is safe to drink.

I never assumed that biden/the left/the bureaucracies had any recognizable competence or professionalism, but the high speed disintegration of infrastructure is pretty impressive.

There’s significant morning and afternoon traffic on a state highway that goes through my little town. There are potholes on that road that are so large and have been there so long; I noticed yesterday that the traffic stream now, in its entirety, takes a swerve to the left (in to the center of the road) as it approaches those areas. Anyone who uses that primary connecting road frequently knows what’s there and is tired of what it does to their vehicle. I wonder how long it will take before the low-speed car crashes come to the attention of the state people responsible for maintenance.

Individuals have been screaming about the disrepair of that road for at least a year and keep thinking the town council “has to do something”, which they can’t. It’s a state road and the state just keeps saying there’s no budget for it.

Such a shame…Oregon used to stand out for their good roads. Guess when woke-ism creates lower revenues, the inflated budgets must be cut. Starting at the top – it takes a lot of clerical pay to equal one admin.
Wonder how long before our roads look like California’s.
