From Wikipedia:

Glen Coe (Scottish Gaelic: Gleann Comhann) is a glen of volcanic origins, in the Highlands of Scotland. It lies in the north of the county of Argyll, close to the border with the historic province of Lochaber, within the modern council area of Highland. Glen Coe is regarded as the home of Scottish mountaineering and is popular with hillwalkers and climbers.

A 2010 review by Scottish Natural Heritage into the special qualities of Scotland’s National scenic areas listed the “soaring, dramatic splendour of Glen Coe”, and “the suddenness of the transition between high mountain pass and the lightly wooded strath” as being of note. The review also described the journey through the glen on the main A82 road as “one of the classic Highland journeys”. The main settlement is the village of Glencoe located at the foot of the glen.

Beginning in the 1930s, and at least through the 1960s, Williston, ND (right on the MT border, 47 mi east of our farm) hosted a regional high school band parade–60-70 bands (absolutely no floats, etc) just marched down main street playing Sousa, etc.

The very last band, every year, was the 60 strong bagpipe group from Regina, Sask. It was a bit of a ritual, always waiting eagerly to hear the first bagpipe sound from a distance. Of course, the bagpipe sound can cut through pretty much every other sound. We loved it. My dad loved the bagpipes–not a Scot drop of blood anywhere in our family or in the area, but we loved hearing those bagpipes.

Happy Friday, everybody! Snowing here, but not too cold – above freezing at the moment. Supposed to keep snowing until noon, with a total of about 4″.

Pa, I do like bagpipes. Long ago I had an LP of bagpipe music, and would play it while doing housework.

Mornin’ All. Snowed here in the night and it is still coming down lightly. We only got an inch or so, so far.

I feel a little better this morning. I was miserable all day yesterday, running a 99* to 102* and I ached all over. I finally took a pain reliever about 8:00 last night and that helped a lot. I don’t like to bring down my temp until I can’t stand it anymore. I readhed that point.

Hope you are all doing well.

Especially if you did not watch the hearing yesterday about Twitter/FBI (official name: House Select Subcommittee hearing on the weaponization of the federal government), you should watch this interview by Tucker Carlson of Michael Shellenberger. We have politicians who believe they are Gods and capable of achieving global change in weather. And we have educated forecasters who believe they can guesstimate the weather. And there are failures in both camps.

My weather forecast yesterday saw “no snow in the next seven days. This morning the winds howled & the fluffy snow from the past few days was picked up and swirled on the wind currents. This afternoon it started to snow and the crusted snow from the past few days is being picked up and flung through the air. Visibility here is down to about a quarter of a block.

There’s nothing that needs to be accomplished, I am in a warm shelter and I’m not affected by the cold, the wet, the wind or the sting of the ice and the experience of being in a white out is like being surrounded by a huge ball of cotton candy, so….I think I’ll put my feet up and watch another day of winter slide by..:0)

My sympathies, ‘maus! We’ve got the wind today, howling gales of it where large buildings shudder and moan frequently, but still clear blue skies up above. My fingers are crossed that we’ll continue NOT to get snow, and that yours will stop immediately. Stay warm and snug! Got a good book to read?

Thanks for your sympathy Tundra…:0) I am once again snowed in and I think our 90 year old mayor retired from the road clearing business, so if the snow has stopped by morning, I’m gonna have to see if I can find a farmer with a tractor who’s willing to plow out the main road again…

A good book…yes, I have a few :0)… I’m loving Austrailian author Matthew Reilly’s fictional novels at the moment.

Time for your break from politics with:

IDITAROD UPDATE, Day 5 just started.

The race has moved into the exciting phase–post 24-hour rest–where I need to check in 4-5 times per day just to keep up. But it is not a day I have the luxury for that (morning Mass, Adoration, Soup Supper and Stations of the Cross come first), so I’ll have to give you a brief update now and come back later this evening for another.

The race appears to be coming down to an all-out battle between Brent Sass and Jessie Holmes. Brent currently has the lead by about 7 miles; but Jessie is traveling just over 2 mph faster than Brent, and at that rate will reel him in quickly. They are both between Grayling and Eagle Island:

Amazingly enough, there was NO wind reported this morning at Anvik. That is a small miracle on the Yukon River this time of year, and much appreciated by all the mushers.

There is also some artifact in Brent’s lead. He is planning to take his 8 hour mandatory rest on the river at Kaltag, but Jessie already took it back at Anvik. When Brent has to stop, Jessie can keep going.

Jessie won the First to the Yukon Award in Anvik. It consists of a luxury 5 course meal prepared by a top chef from Anchorage who flies all the food out with him, and a monetary award. Most mushers invite an elder from the village to share the meal with them. Since Jessie declared his 8 as soon as he reached the village, there was plenty of time to enjoy the splendid repast. Here’s what it consisted of (thanks to Terrie Hanke for the details:

Jessie Holmes arrived in the Yukon Community of Anvik early Friday morning at 04:03. He intends to take his 8-hour Yukon rest while enjoying a five-course gourmet meal prepared by Marx Bros Café’s Executive Chef, jack Amon. The first to the Yukon award has been presented since 1983 at either Ruby on the Northern route or Anvik on the Southern route. This is the first year that Marx Bros Café is sponsoring the award.

The menu prepared by Chef Amon consisted of a lobster bisque, garnished with a king crab salad creme fraiche followed by the Marx Brothers Caesar salad, a filet mignon with a red wine demi-glace, sauteed with maitake mushrooms, asparagus and mashed Yukon gold potatoes. Dessert was the infamous Marx Bros. Café cheesecake. Holmes thoroughly enjoyed his meal, especially the cheesecake.

Looking back at the past ten races, who was first to the Yukon and also the finish line? There have only been two racers to achieve both firsts – Brent Sass in 2022 and Dallas Seavey in 2021. Sorry Jessie, you’d perhaps like more assurance but 2 out of 10 is no guarantee.

With that thought I must leave you here, with perhaps more later.

    GO DOGS!
