On this date in 1953, a discovery was made – the chemical structure of DNA. Cambridge University scientists James D. Watson and Francis H.C. Crick announce that they have determined the double-helix structure of DNA, the molecule containing human genes.
Believe it or not, I remember learning about this in 8th grade. That would have been in 1960 or 1961.
What I didn’t know (or don’t remember) is that the existence of dna had been known since the 1860’s, although it’s role in genetic inheritance wasn’t realized until the 1940’s.
We have come a long way since 1953, for good or for ill. I think it’s mostly for good.

Well speaking of school, I was in 7th grade when JFK was shot. Don’t remember about DNA, but then again, I wasn’t all that interested in it either. I was more into ham radio.

I loved all the scientific discoveries. Don’t remember when I learned them, but I started junior high in 1961. Seem to recall something about an uncredited woman who saw the pattern.
My mother remembered being taught in high school (late 1930’s) that the atom could not be split. So much for “don’t question science”…

Mornin’ All. It started snowing in the early hours last night and it is still coming down. We got at least a couple of inches, maybe more. It is 25* and is supposed to snow all day. I am snug and warm inside with Loki.
Guess I will spend the day puttering and straightening up things I have let go the last few days. Hope you all have a nice….warm…. day.

Not the Bee reported a new analysis of homicide rates shows New Orleans is 8th IN THE WORLD for last year. I have to go near theee tomorrow, and am considering taking the long way (I 12 north of the lake, then south on the Causeway). This avoids the entire of New Orleans, which last week had 5 shootings on Interstate 10. The neighboring parishes do not have even a 10th of the crime. The Bee attributes decades of Democratic leadership for in the highest crime US cities.

Thank you. I really haven’t had the urge so far. Hoping that this long will cure some of that. But doing something for 38 years can put a hold on one. I just feel bad because I never wanted to be thought of as a quitter! 😉
