Seen on social media – After Hurricane Ian

Tampa Bay Times:

A slow march of utility trucks headed to Sanibel Island Tuesday afternoon following temporary repairs to the Sanibel Causeway, which was broken in three locations during Hurricane Ian.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the opening of the causeway — the only road pathway to the island — at a news conference in Fort Myers on Tuesday. As he spoke, trucks moved in the background above his head.

The bridge will need further repairs, and will be open for broad public traffic on Oct. 21, DeSantis said.

Jared Purdue, the Florida Department of Transportation secretary, said the bridge structure was in good shape after the hurricane, but the land part of the causeway needed repair. Engineers deemed the bridge safe for passage for the support convoy, he said.

While the causeway was unpassable, the state had to fly in search-and-rescue teams and electrical workers. DeSantis said his administration also spoke with the federal government about getting an amphibious landing craft, which they would have used this week had the causeway not been cleared for passage.

A few replies thanked Biden. LOL If Biden had been in charge, the money would have been raised, divided out between his buddies, DeSantis would have been accused of causing the hurricane, no plan of rebuilding would have been made, no workers would have been there, and everyone in D.C. would have already on onto something else. In other words……no bridge.

Florida contractors Superior Construction and Ajax Paving are tackling emergency repairs to the Sanibel Causeway in Lee County, Fla., aiming to have multiple washouts of the three-mile, three-bridge barrier island-to-mainland link repaired by Oct. 31, the Florida Dept. of Transportation says.

In the wake of Hurricane Ian’s devastation across Florida, government officials prioritized emergency road work to reestablish a connection with hard-hit barrier islands. Crews restored access to Pine Island in just a few days, with state attention now turned to the Sanibel Island connector.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) directed FDOT on Oct. 4 to prioritize causeway repair to allow first responders access to the island, as well as crews working to remove debris and restore power.

I think DeSantis has done an awesome job in Florida. Few people can really grasp the extent of what he’s had to manage after the hurricane. If he hasn’t stepped up and shown true leadership and the ability to get men and equipment and supplies where and when needed, by golly I haven’t seen it.

I get that people have presidential picks. Fine. Trashing, or trying to, the reputation of the governor is not doing the other candidates any favors. It’s really off putting to a lot of people.
