Sundance linked to this video on his post today at The Last Refuge. I think it is fascinating how they rescue people stranded on the island, along with their pets!
According to Sundance, evacuation of the island is now mandatory. Security on the island is being provided by the National Guard.
Coast Guard crews have been rescuing people stranded in communities in Florida devastated by Hurricane Ian. An aircrew on an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Miami spent much of Thursday pulling residents and their pets from flooded neighborhoods on Sanibel Island. Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyler Kilbane captured remarkable video from a camera mounted on his helmet.
If you haven’t read his first-person on the spot report from Florida, you will find it here:
God bless those brave rescuers.

Amen! Also appreciated is allowing residents to take their pets with them. That has not always been allowed in shelters after past hurricanes or other disasters.

I commented on CTH that many people stayed behind before Katrina b/c their pets were refused, and the rules were changed after that.
