    Shoes and dogs!
    We got a puppy once, and she cried and cried all the first night. The next night, we put husband’s work boots in her enclosure; she slept on them peacefully from then on.
    I believe dogs associate shoes with their owners and use them as a pacifier when we’re away. A proxy, so to speak.
