After the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, Naoto Matsumura returned to the no-go zone to care for cows, chickens, dogs, cats, ponies and other animals left behind by their owners. Despite daily exposure to radiation, he and the animals continue to live. A true hero!

Border collies are awesome dogs. Watching one work fills me with such respect. As do working dogs in general. Whether sheparding, guarding, retrieving or pulling, working dogs are such a boon to us. That dogs also love us and comfort us and give us their all so willingly is truly one of God’s miracles.

I agree with everything you said! My daughter had a border collie, and I absolutely loved her; we all miss her. Smart as a whip but a great family dog. Requires a lot of exercise, though – more than I could give one.

Indeed, yes. Border collies are high energy dogs that need focus and a job to do. When they don’t have that, they turn their frustration to chewing, digging, and general destruction. They are smart as can be and have a single-minded dedication to their job. Incredible to watch in agility trials. So fast going through the weave poles, which is the hardest obstacle to teach a dog IMO, that you can barely see them do it. I competed in agility with my mixed breed house dog for several years. Lots of fun!

Believe it or not, when she was a young dog, they had her in a 3rd floor apartment in Chicago. Fortunately, they had a great dog park within walking distance, where they played ball, and a dog beach, where Darby would swim and fetch tennis balls for hours if you let her.

Here she is – our Darby girl. Miss her. This pic is her last summer at Lake Michigan in Manistee. She was 12, I think, and still swimming and fetching that Frisbee!

Stella, Is that not new puppy-not-yet-named with Mom and siblings before he came home? If not, it sure looks like them. Funny the things that stick in one’s memory.

Yes it is! Tucker, mom, step sister and grandma (on the far left).
