Thank you Stella. The fact that the mother stated that the son was out practicing with his Christmas present causes a shift in my perception of why he took that specific gun to school.

I have seen cases in the past where they questioned charging the parents. I usually disagreed. But, in this case, I think they should.

Going out on a limb to play the role of Devil’s advocate here. Where the parents and school officials had met to discus the child, it’s going to be difficult too single out the parents and not include school officials, and maybe even law enforcement, in any discussion that points fingers on culpability. They all were aware of a danger. There will most likely be howls from the citizenry looking for justice, and talk about locking someone up and “throwing away the key” as closure to this tragedy. However, if the child is shown to be mentally unstable enough, he might not be able to be charged to an extent that satisfies this desire. Are the parents truly guilty of something here, or is the prosecution looking for someone else to blame? A child killing children. This case is going to be an emotional one no matter what. Prayers for all involved.

I agree that the school administration bears blame here, but I also think that the parents are truly guilty – Not necessarily for buying him a gun, but they did not restrict its access/use, as they are legally required to do. They also did not check to see if he had possession of the gun in his backpack. His father apparently already knew that the gun had been taken from their home.
