Lucille, when I was a teenager I saw one of my favorite movies, Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford, in the theater. I knew about the fur trapping trade and mountain men vaguely, but after the movie I became intrigued.
There was a lot of press and Redford was interviewed a lot, and somehow in those prehistoric no internet days I read an article in which he named a book that had fictionalized the tale of the main character. I read the book and the descriptions of the west and the areas the mountain men travelled, their struggles and adventures and hair lifting (har de har) experiences planted a love of the areas in my mind. I sought out biographies of men like Kit Carson, and the West came alive through the eyes of these men.
Most of them I’ve never seen, but the descriptions of areas like the Grand Tetons lives in my mind still. Isn’t it wonderful how a good writer can put a picture in your mind that you carry forever? Unless a painting or picture is just one of a kind jump off the canvas, most people will enjoy it and savor it in the moment, but they won’t remember most of them.
It’s much more difficult for a writer to put a picture in our heads, but if they can do it effectively then it is there forever. As a teen I read Edgar Allen Poe stories and poems and thoroughly enjoyed the chills and thrills. Today and I still vividly see Fortunato finally comprehending his situation as he is being bricked up, and I can hear that heart beating, beating away under the floor.

I read Zane Grey’s books over and over. When I finally moved out West, I loved to go to the desert and see the kinds of scenes he wrote about. In fact, I really enjoyed sitting in a place like he described and reading one of his books.

I read a few of his stories, but Louis L’Amour was my fave. I once owned just about all his books in paperbacks.

Exactly for me, but I escaped into my books. And, I had visited the west, especially Wyoming where my aunt’s family lived in Cody. When I moved to Utah, there is was in my yard! There is a plaque at the corner or Washington and 40th street in Ogden honoring Kit Carson’s visit to that part of Utah. Ft. Bridger holds a festival every Labor Day honoring the Rendezvous.
BTW, Grand Tetons translates from French to Big Breasts. Those explorers/trappers clearly had a sense of humor (or were delusional).

They were probably both! I once stayed in Carson City NV. We did lots of running around all over Nevada and California that week. Boy it was a great time.

I remember loving to read about Scotland. The history, languages, Nature’s creatures that lived there both real and mythical. When I got the chance to go see and then to live there for so long was like a dream came true! And of course there’s Robbie, my wild baldy Highlander with the charm of a pirate, and the accent of a Prince.
What a lucky gal I’ve been!

Nah, possums won’t do anything but his a little. Raccoons are what I used to hate. And chipmunks. They could go extinct and I’d celebrate big time.

Mornin’ All. Sunny, hot and humid here. My son and DIL are traveling with their daughters and were in WI visiting the Laura Ingalls Museum and campground. The two oldest girls 6 and 4, insisted on being called Mary and Laura. And, they were calling their parents Maw and Paw. My son got a real kick out of that. They are all enjoying their trip. My DIL had made a detailed itinerary and sent it to me. So, I have been able to follow along with them. They stayed in campgrounds and I could look up the websites for the places they went to. So it has been fun for me, too. Better go. The garbage truck is coming and I have to put something in it. Have a nice day.

Hi mom! If it is the same place in WI, there is a replica cabin several miles out of town that is where they lived in “The Big Woods”. Beautiful area.

I knew there was a school house, and some conestoga wagons that you can sleep in. They stayed there longer than they intended to because they enjoyed it so much.

Yup, I think it’s the same place – in Pepin, WI, on the Mississippi River, and the cabin is seven miles away in the country.

I guess not – haven’t heard it on Gubmint News Networks. Someone was funnin’ us, maybe; the illustrious-who-never-lies-to-us-Wikipedia says he was cremated.
“Disney had been a heavy smoker since World War I. He did not use cigarettes with filters and had smoked a pipe as a young man. In early November 1966, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and was treated with cobalt therapy. On November 30, he felt unwell and was taken by ambulance from his home to St. Joseph Hospital where, on December 15, 1966, ten days after his 65th birthday, he died of circulatory collapse caused by the cancer.[148] His remains were cremated two days later and his ashes interred at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.[149][v]”

I remember hearing forever ago that he did the cryo-vac thing. I never heard about cremation. That is definitely a tough one to come back from. 😉
