Lucille, thank you, what a useful and caring post in this terrible summer heat. Like you, I hope our little friends, wild and domestic, are able to find water. I sometimes forget to have as much care as you, for I am most fortunate to live in an area where we very rarely experience droughts, or temps over 100.

Menagerie, this heat has been quite something for the Great Northwest and Inland NW. Worst in history apparently. We’ll be at 105 today. It’s already been a relatively dry winter and spring. The wild creatures which give us such delight to see roaming around the neighborhoods seem to be laying low and maybe are encamped at the lakes. I hope so.

As for my neighbors who have dogs, I’ve not heard any of them barking per usual. Hope that means they are being kept inside with the air conditioning on while the family is working. My kitties are sleeping mostly on the floors rather than their usual perches on the bed or their special chairs in the living room.

Can’t wait until all this is gone and back to normal weather patterns.

Had a kiddie pool out for several summers and never saw a dog or cat in it, although the dogs always drank from it. However, when it was hot, Zauber, the GSD and Daisy, the Australian Shepherd walked into the edge of the lake or the drainage ditch by the side of our road and stood with the water up to their chests.

Do you suppose the people taught it to do that? Maybe it was like Lucky Dog, who figured out how to open the flapper door knob by accident, then kept doing it functionally.

On the radio this a.m., they said they didn’t and were flabbergasted – but dogs ARE smart, and you know it probably connected the dots somehow or another from past experience…. people pushing that button and his/her people coming to the door.

I had a cat who would rattle the doorknob to let me know she wanted out. She couldn’t turn it herself, as far as I know.

I think this is hysterical. And, how did he know that would get their attention? Of course, I never knew why our dogs ran to the front door when they heard a doorbell on the TV. We NEVER had a doorbell. 🙄
