    We watched a very young retriever training in the pond with its owner this evening. Oh how they love to jump in muddy water after a stick, or whatever it was the guy was really throwing. I wonder how long it takes to teach them the basics to be a good hunting dog.

      My son has a lab that had no training and was several years old. They took her out hunting just to see what she would do and shot a bird. She took off after it and brought it back carefully and laid it at their feet. She just seemed to be a natural. She didn’t maul it at all.

      I think the breeding is very strong. My Stella was bred by the man who runs the dogs at a local hunt club. I was told by a man I worked with that the dogs would run until their feet were bloody if they let them.
