        Morning, Stevie! Slushy cold in the photos and in the Idaho Panhandle. But actually, though it’s steadily snowed for many hours, the temperature is 24 degrees and quite doable.

        Instead, I’ll dream of this bench in Mataiva, French Polynesia were it will have a high of 80 degrees today with some rain…

    Good morning everyone, hope your days are getting warmer and longer. My brother texted me last night. His weather forecast for a little town outside Nashville is brutal. An inch of ice, followed by 8-12 inches of snow. So far we have escaped all the cold and frozen stuff. Sometimes our temps have dropped below thirty, but I can’t complain. Of course, I haven’t looked at this week’s forecast either.

      -4 here in OKC. Wind chill -30. We received 8″ of snow in my neighborhood with another powerful blast on Wednesday. Won’t be back up to 32 for about a week. I live in an old house in historic district. Historic Society wouldn’t allow us to replace windows. Frigid air is rushing in. With my thermostat set at 75, it is 60 inside my house. Have shut the door on my bedroom to keep the heat in the room. This is the only cozy room in my house! I’m thankful to still have power. Experts are telling people to turn off all unnecessary electronics, not use any major appliances. So I’ll have dirty clothes and a sink full of dishes for a while. I am happy that I do have power!

        Here too Surf! Eastern OK…3 degrees and still snowing with about 6″ already on the ground. -9 wind chill…take care and stay warm!

        Do your best to stay warm! It’s hard to keep a drafty old house warm. Mine is rarely warmer than the 60’s in the winter, but mainly because I don’t want to pay a fortune every month to keep it in the 70’s. My daughter complained about it when she lived with me, but I always told her to put on a sweater. That’s my solution: Down-filled throws and sweaters!

        I do admit that 60 is on the low side. Fortunately it won’t last forever.

        Surf, the Alaska solution to your problem is to shrink-wrap your windows and hang a blanket over the inside of each door. Helps a lot to keep the heat in. Surely hope this bitter cold is over quickly, and that you don’t have to go out much.

          I forgot about shrink wrapping. I used to do that in the house I lived in formerly that had really old wood windows. Helps a lot.

          Thanks Tundra! My late husband was a general contractor. We lived in SoCal on the beach side of the mountains and never experienced weather like this. Still, I should have known to prepare like you advised before this weather hit. One of hubby’s best friends (also a contractor) told me to do the same thing. Lesson learned. Too late for me to purchase the supplies as another 8″ is expected tomorrow. I couldn’t have gotten out of my driveway today if my neighbor (we share a driveway) had not already plowed through the snow with his monster SUV. Rolling blackouts are now happening in my state and many others to preserve the power grid. I’m not using any major appliances, have thermostat at 68, keep the lights turned off. The only electricity I use is to power my computer and internet. Phone is fully charged but unplugged. COME ON SPRING!

    Mornin’ All. I think I will skip the weather complaints from here today. Right now on the news they are talking about getting the kids back into school.So many kids have lost their chance to get scholarships because of the kids not being in school. Mostly they are from California. I think they are going to be able to get rid of that governor in California. Too bad it takes so long. Well, try to stay warm, wherever you are.

    Gray here. Temp dropping since dawn. 100% chance of rain predicted; light drizzle underway. 20 mph wind from the north. Ice predicted. Today is supposed to be Lundi Gras, tomorrow Mardi Gras. Cancelled parades and closed bars anyway, so brutally cold weather and ice on the roads shouldn’t matter to most: work and school were closed anyway for the holiday. People in the coastal south don’t know how to drive on ice and snow, so the few who do try to stay out of their way.

    Good news is, I have a good mystery novel and warm soup….

    Good morning, everyone! Temps in the teens here. We had an inch or so of snow last night, and we are expecting another 6-8 inches tonight. I hate winter. I AM thankful that I don’t have to drive anywhere. When I was working, I had a 20 mile drive starting at 7:15 am. Don’t miss those days!

    Right now in Georgia, we are at 40 degrees. It’s supposed to get cold and icy in the next few days. There IS hope! It’s supposed to get up to the mid 60’s middle of next week. That will feel like Spring!

    This morning the sun is shining brighter than I’ve seen for eons and it’s only 5 below this morning so there is a real possibility that today we may finally experience above zero temps here.

      For us, bright sun and clear skies in the winter usually mean it is going to get colder, as a thick cloud layers holds the heat in. Our coldest days tend to be sunny ones. Just glad you are warming up to near zero, maus! So much better than the -20s.

          Cormorants, really? I’d have thought you are too far inland from the Gulf for them. Canada Geese are pretty, but are sure a nuisance in large numbers. The campus of the University of Washington in Seattle (where I went to PA school) has many hundreds of them and they crap all over everything and hiss at people aggressively.

            Yes, our cormorants are frequently drying their wings while standing on a stump which sticks out of the water mid-lake. They sometimes stand on the backs of the turtles who sun themselves there. Maybe our gulf coast cormorants are different from ocean-going ones. Czar called them “fish eating bastads”.

    Just heard from Sharon via text, and it seems she has it worse than any of us. She gave permission to share with you:

    I imagine there is some information about Oregon’s ice storm floating around …

    I’ve never seen worse. Until midnight last night, they were continually slipping the estimated time for restoration of power. They are no longer giving any estimates at all.

    I’ve been without power since Friday afternoon. All of my large trees and bushes are destroyed, much of them laying on the ground in pieces. The entire region is like that.

    Oregon City, where my son and DIL live, is massive destruction.

    My blessings are easy to see …

    About a month ago, my son upgraded my phone to unlimited data (I’m on his plan) … if that had not been done, I couldn’t be sending this email. Yay!

    I have a gas water heater that is not dependent on electricity at all, so I still have hot water. Again, yay.

    I have a car phone charger and never let my gas tank get lower than 3/4 tank, so I can keep the phone charged, get warmed up, and read a bit while those things are happening.

    I spend part of each day dragging broken branches and using my big manual pruning shears to keep cleaning up all the broken stuff. Helps pass the time, keeps me warm.

    The fireplace is pleasant enough to sit in front of but does not heat the house, and my floorplan does not lend itself to shutting the living room off.

    The remainder of the house is a steady 47 degrees, drifting to 49 or 50 by the end of the day. It’s do-able and I don’t have to worry about pipes freezing.

    Got the charcoal grill fired up yesterday to heat soup on.

    Absolutely nothing open anywhere. All traffic lights dark. Many streets impassable because of fallen trees.

    Like my son says, we’re camping in our houses.

    Doing ok and grateful for the options that remain.

    We’ve always heard that Russia is one of the coldest places ever…mmmmm, not so much today in St. Petersburg…looks like many parts of the U.S. have them beat, hands down….
