Mornin’ all. Happy New Year. Woke up this morning to the kind of day you move to Florida for. It is almost 75* with a cool breeze. I hope this is a taste of what is to come in 2021.

After watching this YouTube video, I decided to purchase and try Italian San Marzano tomatoes in a dish (I used them in chili).
I ordered a store brand from my local Meijer store, but they didn’t have that brand in stock, so I received a 28 oz can of Cento San Marzano whole peeled tomatoes. The San Marzano Italian tomatoes are about three times the price ($4.49), and they don’t contain calcium chloride. The Cento brand does contain basil leaf and “naturally derived citric acid”. The liquid in the can is “San Marzano puree”.
Prior to this, I always bought the store brand, or whatever was on sale. What did I determine?
First thing that I noticed is that the tomatoes are softer than my usual store brand and much easier to break down; no hard bits or cores. Second, there are fewer seeds. Third, the liquid they come in is thick. Fourth, the taste is much sweeter and less acid than my store brand.
My conclusion is that the Cento San Marzano tomatoes from Italy are far superior to anything I have purchased in the past, and I will continue to purchase them. I will try the similar store brand when I am able to obtain it, is is about 50 cents cheaper than the Cento brand.

PS: I recently started watching this woman’s videos, and I really like her. She was born and lived in Moscow, and moved with her family to Boston when she was 13.

Hope this year is better than the last, with the knowledge we have all gained, and the mercy of God. 🙂

Did you know that Nat “King” Cole had a younger (and talented) brother. I just learned from Mark Steyn that he died in 2020. His name was Freddy:

Here’s my annual New Year take on some of those who left us these last twelve months. As I always say, it’s not intended to be a comprehensive list, because, as the late Diana Mosley used to drawl to me with aristocratic ennui, “People die non-stop” – which is very true. Partly for that reason, this year we introduced a regular obituary feature on the new audio Mark Steyn Show: Some of those eulogies have been collated into three Last Call specials. This holiday season I also hosted two audio collages saluting those who departed the scenr in film and song, where you may find some of those not mentioned below. Otherwise, here come some of the passings I noted, sometimes for newsworthy reasons, sometimes for more personal ones, with more at the links – from various viceroys to not so strong strongmen, marchionesses to mononymous Mexicans, soldiers’ sweethearts to socialist princesses:

Since I hadn’t heard of Freddy Cole before, I searched out another obituary in addition to Steyn’s. NPR has a very nice one…

I’m going to send the vid to a friend of mine in his 80s who is a big blues and smooth jazz fan to see if he’s familiar with Freddy. Thanks for posting.

G’evening Stella, ladies and gentlymen.
Wishing you and yours the very best year in 2021, and thanks to Stella for keeping this blog going. There are times (like all of 2020 lol!) when one hasn’t much to say, and it is comforting to come here and know there are places still where normalcy resides.
2021 is going to be the most entertaining yet!
