Beautiful photo, Stella, of St. Mary’s Basilica, Kraków.
Church of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven is a Brick Gothic church re-built in the 14th century (originally built in the early 13th century), adjacent to the Main Market Square in Kraków, Poland. Standing 80 m (262 ft) tall, it is particularly famous for its wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss. @Wikipedia

Good morning everyone. Yesterday I was blessed with two of my grandchildren, ages eight and seven, all day. Still plenty young to be caught up in the wonder of Christmas. It really was a joy filled day. Could not have been more special and wonderful. I hope you all get moments like that during the holidays!

They must have worn me out, I slept all night long for the first time in months, and it was great.

An interesting article on some old Advent customs. Also includes more information about the O antiphons in “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.”

Mornin’ all. Another sunny day here in Florida. It is cold, however, 44* when I got up. I was shocked to see frost on spots on the ground and on the roofs of the buildings. The sky is perfectly clear, so the temp will go up pretty fast. I am trying to keep a good attitude, but it is getting harder and harder. But, I am still working on it.

Good morning, aus! We got a tiny bit of snow dusting and then rain which removed it overnight. The rest of the day will be overcast and cold but not bad. We’re at 36 degrees right now. The city will look like this in a few days….

      Be blessed!

Saw this the other day, and thought right away about czar. I think he said that they are getting a better service in their area, but just in case … Fast forward to the part where they discuss their new, successful, internet service, which is Nomad internet.

I’ll check this out! We are rural, and first got our service from our electrical company. Now we get it from our phone (Landline) company. My DH’s job uses Hughes Net which is useless. I’ve been looking for an alternative for a long time. Thanks so much!

We knew we wouldn’t have internet service here when we moved but neither of us was internet addicted so the dial-up DSL was OK. After ATT killed all local DSL by changing every DSL access number to long-distance and telling us our contract forbade doing data on long-distance dial-up without an expensive (but still slow) ATT line we moved to satellite.

Howard Net (see where I’m going here?) worked whenever there wasn’t a storm ( or a flatuent buzzard) anywhere to our south in a line between us and their satellite to our south, not that infrequently, and we had blurbs that required our contacting their service line. 24/7 it was an Asian-Pacific service with bad phone connections and operators who had problems with English. Each time you called you had to wade thru a recorded list of procedures they wanted you to take, presuming that you’re too stupid to have tried them, before you could get to deal with the service agent in pidgin English.

We went for a while sans internet until Verizon built a tower a mile east and then we had a 0.7 MBPS hotspot. Now our electric co-op is offering us real wi-fi at 25 MBPS or 100 MBPS, it won’t be here until early summer at best but they are offering free hi-speed wi-fi at a number of sites around the county where you jes drive up and do your stuff. I have no complaints with their service so far, I sent a complaint email to their office about a problem I had getting info about a particular item relating to installation and I was answered by the CEO. I now have his email and his invite to email at any time with any problems and he’ll get back with me.

WaPo has dug deeply and discovered that entrepreneur, abolitionist, and philanthropist Johns Hopkins, whom the university and hospital are named after, owned four slaves!!!! Seems a detailed scourging of the 1850 census found he – GASP – listed four person as property!!!!! Never mind his abolitionist work, never mind his philanthropy, the census said he owned four people. Despite the possibility the census could be wrong it seems that one modern-day ‘Oh Sh*t’ can wipe out over a hundred years of attaboys.

I might suggest that those offended by attending the 9th-rated university in the US instead attend some public university in a ‘woke’ state and those too offended to have their lives saved by the #3 rated hospital in the nation instead go to a public health of VA hospital

Seems to me that the other abolitionists would have known if he owned slaves and certainly would have said something about it. Maybe there was fake news and lying census takers even then.

Be interesting to see exactly what the census wording was and if it was consistent with how other slave owners had their “property” listed. For instance, does the record say “African slaves” or what?

      • czarowniczy says:

L’d like to see that census (there’s that internet problem) as most slaves were not listed on the census prior to 1870 though some owners did volunteer their names, though there was a census ‘slave schedule’ in 1850 where slaves were listed in quantity and not by name – Maryland had one of these schedules. Free Person of Color were listed as they were considered citizens.
Issue is still that here’s a person who relented, became a philanthropist and abolitionist, leaving a positive legacy that’s positively effected untold thousands for nearly two centuries and that one past incident wipes it all out.
For the Left there no redemption, just damnation without end.

on the nightly NOLA news is that murders are up 75% over this time last year while carjackings are up 142% over this time last year. Next two stories covered a guy carjacked in his driveway in an upscale neighborhood (no description of the carjacker was provided by the news…hmmmmm) and a home invasion in another upscale neighborhood where the homeowner was pistol whipped but managed to shoot all four invaders, killing two. And the mayor is furloughing police.

Great speech but he might as well have been talking in the desert. Note that he mentioned the video of a Hollywood production crew setting up next to where a bar was shut down. Same in NOLA where bars and restaurants operate under onerous restrictions while the Hollywood crews and their local support teams operate like there’s no problem at all. Small business isn’t ‘Democratic’ (OK, hair braiding and nail salons) but big business can be milked to death. And Hollywood carries the Democrat’s water.
