Big thing on the city news tonite, City Council is aggressively seeking out streets in NOLA named after miscreants who fought on the Confederate’s side during the Civil War. Never mind that most of those most likely potentially offended by four of the five street names sure as hell wouldn’t recognize them, the woken pols are pointing it out to their heavily disinterested constituents. Robert E. Lee is perhaps the only one they’d recognize. Part that gets me is the pols are largely doing it to impress the voters BUT in the local runoff election set for next week only about 15,000 people voted, that’s just 15% of those who voted early for the November election. Guess the dead left town for he Thanksgiving holiday.

Anyway, I wrote our city councilwoman and asked if there were any plans afoot to rename the street our house is on. Seems that it’s the name of a town in England BUT there were, at a cursory records check, some 128 persons with that same surname who fought for the Confederacy. I wondered if, were anyone offended at some point in the future by the street’s name, how much time would we get to notify our correspondents of the change.

We’re split between an equally snarky reply and her just canning my email.

Any news as to what’s going on with the Tree House? Is there some new secret code to get in? I have no idea what I’m doing wrong, maybe I’m missing something?

I am like you. I hope Stella will post a “how to” when it’s all settled out. The only way I can see anything new is go to Sundance Twitter feed for the site. It leads me to new posts and I see some comments.

If you click on “The Last Refuge” above on Stella’s blog roll, that might get you in. I confirmed last night and this morning that that is working, at least for now…..

Sundance put up two posts last night, with comments off – which is understandable, until they get the server capacity/function thing adjusted.

I have also been able to get in directly, using my old bookmark for the Treehouse – didn’t have to change a thing. Didn’t even have to clear caches and cookies.

I know we’re supposed to clear them periodically for general housecleaning. I never do because I do not understand what is going to disappear – since there are warnings posted about access to your favorites being lost once you clear them. It irritates me beyond expression (in my ignorance) that the majority of things that computer instructions tell me to do are not understandable….the very first thing in the list of “here’s what to do” is often something I do not understand how to do.

I fully understand why I’ve observed friends and family age into “giving up using their computer” (even email) as they aged and just didn’t feel like fighting the fight any more.

Time for you to do a Mr. Googlepants search to learn how to clear cache on your particular browser. They are all different.

A memory that just popped up:

When I was still working in IT and some strange problem would occur, Mr. Googlepants always found a solution! One day one of our people managed to somehow, by using random key strokes, turn his CRT screen output sideways! I found a solution to fix it with the aid of Mr. Googlepants.

My granddaughter did that when she was a baby. It was on our only laptop. The only other device we had at that time was a kindle, and we used the browser on it to hunt a solution.

        • John Denney says:

          “Cache” is a storage area.

In computerese, it’s a storage area used to boost performance. It takes significant time to access data, whether on a hard drive or out on the ‘net, so if a particular piece of data is referenced often, a copy is kept where it can be accessed quickly.
The problem with caching is knowing when to get a fresh copy because the original data changed, making your cached copy invalid.
There’s a “no-cache” tag in HTML that prohibits a browser from caching that page, used on pages that change often.
A browser doesn’t know ahead of time what data will be needed again, so how does it know what to keep? All of it. So your cache gets huge. Smarter browsers may delete stuff that hasn’t been referenced in a while.
But all browsers have a “clear cache” command somewhere, so you can toss it all and start over.

Keeping a close check on our beloved Treehouse on site and on Twitter. So hoping Sundance resolves the comments issue. If possible, if nothing is getting thru, could an update be posted here? I know I’m not the only one having withdrawals. Please pray for Sundance and tech team that the kinks get worked out. Till then, will be checking in here. Don’t trust any other places at the moment.

Here is an artist that was liked before:
Joseph Farquharson (1846-1935) was a Scottish painter best known for his winter landscapes, mostly in Scotland and very often including animals. He is most famous for his snowy winter landscapes, often featuring sheep and often depicting dawn or dusk. Nicknames include “‘Frozen Mutton’ Farquharson” and “The Painting Laird”.

Considering the stress and enforced schedules, looks to me like some superior performance under pressure, certainly including the efforts of the folks building the new operation with the adjustments. This is certainly not easy for anyone who is close to the eye. A pretty amazing Thanksgiving Week production.

You’re welcome, Stella. And no need to apologize for the sarcasm.(I think your expression is closer to a valid observation than to sarcasm.) I would pull my hair out if I thought it would do any good. Good grief.

I have had to repress the desire to comment about the obvious self-centeredness in addition to the apparent lack of reading comprehension. It does give some insight to what is behind the endless, endless, ENDLESS essentially meaningless comments in most threads on most days. Really tiresome.

    • Good idea. I tried them and they both worked. I don’t know if it was because things have resolved or that is some way around whatever the issue was.
I saw that white page with “Site Will Be Undergoing Maintenance During This Process and May Be Unavailable For Approximately 1 Hr.”, but then my updated bookmark worked. Thanks for the idea. 🙂
It was a Huuuge task done very well IMHO!

Just got an email that says this about accessing CTH 2.0:

Here in West Los Angeles, I have not been able to access the updated (new) CTH 2.0 for several days. No amount of cache clearing, on 4 browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave and Epic) or machines (2 desktops, 1 laptop, 1 phone) has remedied the problem.

I am on Verizon wireless and WIFI. (I have assumed this was/is a Verizon TTL issue, but whatever).

In the last 10 minutes, though, it updated. All of my machines are now showing the “maintenance” page. So if others have been having similar problems, perhaps theirs will also resolve concurrently with mine having done so.

    For what it’s worth.

    • I just checked, and YES now I can see the updates others have previously seen! I have Comcast as my ISP with WIFI (in the house not in a public area) so after me trying everything and your previous advice, I just thought it was them being either slow or shutting out the Treehouse for political reasons.

I think you’ve all done a great job on a Herculean task! 😉
