Mornin’ everyone…………who is here and who will show up later. It is overcast again today and the temp is about the same, only the humidity must be much higher. I walked the doggie an hour ago and my hair is still wet. That storm may affect us with more rain. I hope all in the path of it are taking precautions.

We did our prep yesterday: birdhouses down, fragile plants inside, lawn chairs tucked away, gassed up the cars, bought the bags of emergency Fritos.

Hope you all stay safe and just get a little wind and rain. At least we know you won’t starve. 🙂

When Ike came thru we were an island for a day, all of the roads to our area were either flooded or a gauntlet of mud three feet deep. I ended up spending the late afternoon and night in my truck in a friend’s field. Luckily the pizza joint was open so I didn’t starve, such is survival in the hinterland.

New Orleans’ 99 drainage pumps, critical to staving off street flooding, are fully operational, according to the city’s Sewerage and Water Board, which activated its emergency operations center early Monday. The city has also signed an emergency declaration and is distributing sandbags.

Pulled this from a news story, I wonder how truthful it might be.

It’s true, there are too many citizens with torches and pitchforks looking for politicians’ heads post-K. Y’all done spent billion$ post-K building flood structures and after last year’s ‘Oh shj*t!’ revelations that the Sewage & Water Board was lying (as usual) about the state of the canals and pumps there was a move to hold their feets to the fire.

Everyone in all of the parishes distribute sandbags, it’s part of that feeling you’re actually doing something but if it’s a HEAVY rain you’re not going to get anything with a sandbag but a wet sandbag. They’ve drained the canals way down, gotten a lot of the Katrina trash out of the covered canals but if the initial rain’s over 1″ first hour and 1/2″ an hour after it’s gonna get real wet real fast.

Out here “in the hinterland” there is no water management like in NO. The incident during Ike which isolated us was due to an unheard of rain event of 11″ in a few hours just north of us. The runoff moved downhill, south, and filed the low areas surrounding the larger area we live in, flooding all the roads and drowning the transformers (which were placed ON THE GROUND!!!). In a few hours the water naturally went furthe south, and the roads were passable again.

Good morning, aus! Still smoky overcast here. When I opened my pantry door this morning, the smell of smoke was strong. The same for my laundry area. So much for the building being tightly built.

Time to take to the sea again…this week on “Creole”, Charles Nicholson’s 1927 schooner. It’s the largest wooden sailing yacht in the world at 214 feet…

…and sleeps 11…so there’s plenty of room for any Stellar who wishes to sail along to parts unknown at present….
