      Yep, alot like that here. Still feels like summer. But, leaves on some of the trees look “worn out”: turning brownish and many falling already even tho there has been enough rain. Czar told me its not temperature or weather but the quality and quantity of sunlight that makes leaves turn and fall off.

        I think the quality of sunlight here is strong. Oh, and I got a sunburn the last day we were in Key West and now I have what is called a sunburn rash. It started itching like the dickens last night. I used an allergy cream on it and it helped.

      Good morning, aus! It was very cool overnight and still cool in my apartment. It’s 63 degrees outside right now, with a high of 82. The fire smoke smell is quite pronounced, blowing up from Washington.

      All in all, I’d rather be sitting up on the hillside overlooking this lovely California scene…

    We have duelling hummingbirds on the back porch this morning. There are 2 feeders and at least 4 birds, and they zoom around trying to keep others off the rims. Every once in a while two land on exactly opposite sides and stay for a drink since they can’t see each other. A couple of years ago an expert gave a talk about hummingbirds at the Arboretum. He said there are 10 other hummers in the neighborhood for every one you see. Probably since other than gender features (males have the color) they look alike.

      We had one who looked like somebody had hit him on the head and left a pointed knot. We called him Knothead. He was mean as the devil. The only thing he was afraid of was a mother with a baby. He wouldn’t come near one. They were so entertaining. They were actually smart. The kitchen window was near where we hung one feeder. One would come and hover demanding I hurry at the window if I took the feeder down to fill it.

      Hatch’s first election to the Senate was my first introduction to how the system really works.
      I was getting some work done thru (then) Sen Moss’s (D) office. The ’76 elections were coming up, Sen Moss (very popular) was up for reelection and no one could see anyone likely to replace him. It was sort of a surprise when Hatch popped up, his name wasn’t all the well known outside of inside circles so it looked like Moss would be reelected. Moss was a born-in-Utah Mormon and while Hatch is a Mormon he was born and raised in Pennsylvania and didn’t move to Utah until 1969 – just 8 years later he ‘unseats’ a sitting, native, popular Senator.

      We had a term to describe Hatch: ‘don’t count your Hatches before they’ve chickened’. He’s known to have sudden changes in direction, during the ’76 election he criticized Moss for being in the Senate for three terms, claiming that was too long to serve and if elected he’d fight for term limits. After his election he served in the Senate for 42 years, becoming the longest serving U.S. Senator in US history. He flipped a few more times during the next 42 years too.

      The way Hatch got in, the way Moss appeared to just roll over and the intra-Mormon politics involved were all …interesting…and gave me a different view of the political process. That’s what solidified my belief that the value of a Senate seat from a smallish state like Utah (then about 1.3 million) was just as powerful as one from California or New York and these small states’ Congressional seats were the upcoming battleground, especially as ‘buying’ these seats was cheaper and easier.
