Sitting in a house in NOLA on a hot and muggy day waiting for the A/C re[pair guy who, naturally, showed up right at the end of the day along with the sand pumping crew who also arrived with their huge trucks at the same time. After a day and afternoon of muggy, sweaty waiting the sand was done but the A/C guy can’t find the leak so he put a fluorescent dye into it and will be back in 7 to 10 days.
Tomorrow and Friday it’s back as we’re getting a new shingles put on. We’ll have spent more time there in these two weeks than we have in the last few years.

The obvious question – why?

Also, with the A/C, we have American Home Shield as our maintenance service. They will replace parts on an appliance until you have a ‘new’ unit made of bits and pieces. They’ll spend more money trying not to spend more money than it would take to get a new one.
Don’t know if you were around for it when I sang the saga of our being without an ovens for months while waiting for AHS and GE to fix our rather expensive toy. We went thru not only the regular days sans ovens but Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Mardi Gras and almost to Easter before GE decided to just replace the oven set with a new and updated model, free. During that time we had an assigned repairman die, one quit the program and a wait until they got one to come about 50 miles one-way. The new ovens were installed by a GE crew.
It’s best to be there when your appliances are serviced so you get the full skinny on what’s happening as if you use AHS and your AC goes down at 8 AM on Monday morning it ain’t like you just call a repair service of your choice. You have to call AHS (you’ll probably get an offshore call center) who in turn will call contracted repair services in your area who’ll then schedule you in with their regular customers. You can have a wait so it could be, as with our ovens, a wait.
The AC was looked at a few days back but they couldn’t do a leak test as it was raining. They had to reschedule for yesterday (again, a few days wait) where, when they did the leak test, they found a pinpoint leak but couldn’t pinpoint it, hence the dye. They’ll leave it 7 to 10 days and see if they can locate the leak and fix/replace the leaking part. If they can’t AHS will pay for a ‘comparable unit’ (this one’s going on 30 years old) but we’ll probably just take the cash they offer in replacement and apply it to a better unit more capable of dealing with NOLA heat and humidity.
It’s a good thing we’re retired and have the time to deal with this.

We had A HS at the cabin. Of the many horror stories I can tell you, this one stands out. In early December out unit went out. Their contractor said it was our air handler and the one needed to replace it took about 10 days to get. No heat. It was the coldest it had been all year. I raised hell, but no good news.
They messed around for several days after it came in and it took calls up the chain at AHS to get them out. Next morning the compressor is iced. They come out and do something. More ice later.this goes on for days. Finally the owner comes out, does whatever, can’t remember it all now. When it ices again he tells AHS it was working when he left, that’s it.
Thy then sent one of their troubleshooting guys out, who really was just a good HVAC guy as opposed to someone with tools. They compressor was bad. The air handler had not been, but they had installed it wrong. Ductwork was wrong, and inside the ductwork downstairs they had used tape to reduce the air flow down the incorrect size rather than redo the ductwork, which I had actual had to pay them to do. Twice I had to pay like four million dollars for Freon.
New guy got unit installed on December 24. My “out of pocket not covered” cost at the end was about $1600. And the second guy put the drain next to the house and then when we sold the house that summer we found water damage to the basement.
Not too many reputable contractors will take the pay AHS gives. Never had one single good experience. Whatever goes out here we will just fix.

I have an AC guy I know and trust here and in NOLA who backs up any AHS service. On our AC here the AHS guy serviced it and it still wasn’t working right, still freezing up. I called out guy, he came up and found the AHS guy had forgotten to put a door back on and humid, hot air was getting to where it wasn’t supposed to. He put the door back on and it has been working right since. He felt so bad we got a minimal charge,

Good grief, i’m tired just reading this.
No AC in NO in Aug is cruel and unusual punishment.
Guess they expect one to purchase new equipment, rather than fix the old stuff.
Good luck, sounds like you still need it for the AC.

On rental property the cost of the program’s a tax deduction as is the portion of the fee you pay on a service call. It helps defray the expense but I think the money we spend on booze may eat up the savings.
At home, if you have high-end components it really helps though you trade some sanity for it. As one of our main enjoyments way out here is eating the high-end cooking stuff is the base for our entertainment so when it plotzes we have a go-to. A painful go-to as few services out here want to be bothered with AHS but we’re at where we’re at. We did have fun during the holidays workaround though, got some new toys to cook what we’d normally cook in the oven on the counter.

That’s how I got my Cuisinart convection oven/toaster oven and my electric roaster. Use the Cuisinart all the time!

We just got a Cuisinart air fryer. Love it. I’m just kind of lost with a small oven, but I was able to get rid of the toaster. We use it as a convection oven as much as air fryer.

I have a regular oven too, but it is gas. I use the small oven to make a loaf of banana bread, roast some vegs, etc. I have made a small boneless rib roast in it too!

Czarina does pies, cakes, breads and pastries. I do the meat and vegetables so she got a set of stacked ovens, top one being a convection oven.
We store some pots and pans in the oven when we’re not using it and have utensils in the pantry, in the locker in the garage and on a shelf on the preptable the big 50″ Viking range top is on. You’d swear that we cook for a family of ten but there’s just the 3 of us regularly, cooking and eating seem to have become our major interests…see what happens when you rely on satellite TV for your entertainment?

Bingo, we bought a small roasting oven and a large roasting pan that could take a medium-sized turkey. You get skilled in a hurry and find it works.

Mornin’ everyone. I forgot to check in this morning. The highlight of my day is to put flea stuff on my little doggie and, then to pick up groceries at Walmart. I can’t believe how fast this month has gone.
I just heard on FOX that Herman Caine has passed away from COVID 19. He was 74 and had gone through colon cancer treatments years ago. I really liked him. May he RIP.

Think the Congressional Black Caucus will give him the respect and media sendoff they have John Lewis?
