Our Zauber used to swim the length of out almost 700-foot dam as a pup, he loved the water. As an adult he’d go into the water with us at the far end but never enjoyed it again as he did a pup. None of our dogs now like water, especially bath, though they won’t turn down a romp in the mud in the overflow or the dirty water in the drainage ditches.

I’ve never had a water lover. My daughter’s Border Collie loved it. You couldn’t get her out of the water. She would fetch tennis balls all day.

Our Isla is the same. She loves to swim, dock dive, take a bath, turn flips for a frisbee or a tennis ball. Borders can be nuts! But they sure do love their people!

She (Darby) was a wonderful dog. I still miss her, and she wasn’t even my dog.

One of my nieces has two dogs, a Black Lab and a French Bulldog, who adore the water. She made the mistake one time of taking them to a lake which turned out to have a blue green algae infestation. It was a really scary time until she got them to the vet for remedial medical care. A very expensive excursion, of course.

Here biggest worry is their getting stuck in the mud the lake has in spots or snapping turtles.

My son had a Shephard mix who loved the water in our pool and would run and jump in all day. She loved to jump on you if you were in there. On the other hand we had a Mastiff/Rotweiller mix who hated the pool. If he got out of the house and someone was swimming he would run around the pool until they got close to the edge and he would grab their arm and save them. Couldn’t let him out if Grandkids there.

The “rescue” instinct is powerful in some breeds. We’ve read countless times of just ordinary every day untrained canines who pulled people out of fires, warned them about gas leaks, and dragged them out of a body of water. Bless their darling little hearts!
