I’d posted how, years ago, TSA found dogs lying about finding things in luggage as they hadn’t found things for so long that they wanted that post-find treat. I’d also snarky-posted about how some of the dogs are smarter than the handlers.

They’re a government agency and, as such, 100% safety of passengers isn’t necessarily their primary goal. They suffer from the same bureaucratic mire that infects all government agencies, they can deal with someone sneaking through with a bomb and blowing up a plane, but fouling up internal; procedures is unforgivable. They are slaves to Federal civil service social engineering, the public be damned.

I believe I’d mentioned my friend who worked for the Federal Homeland Security, they have a free pass to walk thru flight screening with their DHS ID but he got regularly stopped as they didn’t recognize his ID. Then there’s the times, even though I’m a TSA Pre-Check member, that the TSA personnel refuse to accept my military-retired ID card as they say it says ‘expired’ – they’re looking under the active duty medical benefits section on the back and not the ‘valid through’ block on the front where it says ‘indefinite’. Try to explain that to them and the few available brain cells they have get overloaded and they start threatening me.

Bottom line is the TSA program is no better than the failed screener program it replaced, it was a knee-jerk response to 911, it even hired most of the failed screeners it’ replaced’, and has some effect on passenger safety but exactly how much is still in question. There hasn’t been any hijackings in the nearly twenty years after 911 but tests of TSA’s effectiveness still show an uncomfortable number of guns, knives and bombs smuggled through by the testers. The number of hijackings wordwide is down so is TSA’s ‘success’ the result of their vigilance, the bad guy’s attentions being turned elsewhere or plain sheer luck?
