It’s the First Day of Spring! Time to dig yourselves (and your cats) out of the snow…

My two are bugging me something fierce this evening…meow this and meow that! If I even look like I’m getting up from my office chair, they run for the kitchen.

I like when a photographer takes black and white photos because it’s his choice. Old b/w are great, too, but there was no film alternative before color
There were darkroom print alternatives like sepia which I like, too…

When I was doing photography I liked B&W for effect, like the old B&W movies. It seems to carry more effect than straight color.

It’s very difficult to pick a fav out of this group…today I’ll choose “The Best Years of Our Lives” (1946) which won the Best Picture Academy Award in 1947…exceptional directing, too, by William Wyler who won Best Director….

My best elementry school friend’s mom watched movies every afternoon (1958-61) so I saw parts of most of these before I was 12. I know it is cheezy, but I love Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, because the background noises are so real, and not overtaken by music placed to convey emotion.

I loved the Bela Lugosi movies. But we watched them late at night all fuzzy with snow. So, we couldn’t really see them well. I like to watch them now.

Yes, that’s probably my all-time favorite film, not just the B/W variety. I have a copy of the entire script–sans the instructions to cast and camera–in book form which was published perhaps 50 years ago. One evening I watched a VHS copy and compared the script and what is actually said in the film. Caught a couple very minor print mistakes. Love it!
Then there is “Citizen Kane” which for many years was the #1 film on lists of worldwide releases. It’d be hard to find one that tops it.

Casablanca is my fav as my entire family and all of our friends, when I was a kid, were WW2 vets in one way or another. It, like Key Largo, also has sets that remind me heavily of early 50s Florida.

Mornin’ Wee!
I figure we’re about to give up even more here in our state. They’ve already been closing everything down. Now this morning the news people are in a panic because a man in his 50’s tested positive on the 17th and died on the 18th. So of course because of how they said it, they I’m sure didn’t mean too(yeah right), made it sound like now it’s killing you within a day and at a lot younger age now.
The masses on FB are even more freaked out and are all saying it’s killing younger people now and it’s only going to get worse. How frightening this is becoming because it’s now killing you within 24 hours.
I tried to point out, nobody knows if he had other underlying health conditions or how long he had been sick before he was tested. Was told I was crazy and ignoring what we are being told. I give up, you can’t talk rationally to hysterical people, so I guess they can just wrap themselves in their toilet paper waiting for the black plague to consume them.

Your last paragraph says it all. You can’t talk rationally to hysteical people. The local news at 10 last nite ended with 4 hopeful points, and an admonition to do something kind for someone else today. My eyes filled up with tears.

I’m trying to be a FB sleuth because we all know everyone puts everything on FB.
I have found a few now who are his family members and from what I’ve gathered so far he was a Penecostal pastor in Tulsa. He went to the hospital on Sunday and had double pneumonia, they tested him on Tuesday and he died yesterday. They are not confirming if he was positive for the virus.
That’s all the family has said about it. So I’m going to search back and see if he had any earlier health problems.
LikeLike
Still can’t find out about any other previous health issues, most of the family have private pages.
A cousin continues commenting on all the news posts saying he was perfectly healthy until 3 weeks ago when he caught a cold that kept getting worse. So at least now they can quit making it sound as if he got it one day and was dead the next. Although now they’re reporting it’s the first community spread case because he didn’t travel. Not true as far as the first community spread, there have been others and it’s community spread everywhere, just like about every other virus.
Besides being one of the pastors at the Church, he was a contractor for ORU(according to the news) and his wife is a Tulsa Public School teacher.
Looking at the Church’s FB page they have a lot of missionaries in their Church and have a lot of missionaries who come to their Church.
I feel sorry for his family and if it’s true he was perfectly healthy that is sad, but the flu will do that as well. I have known other perfectly healthy people of all ages who have gotten the flu and it turned into pneumonia and they either almost died or die die from the pneumonia.

I have friends who have called internet companies in their town and have been told right now with this virus, for the safety of their employees as well as the safety of customers they cannot enter homes at this time. Similar responses from the geek squad.

My daughter has a friend who is terrified, then her husband went to a business meeting out of state. On his trip home, he was driving not flying, he gets a message that 3 people were being tested.
She told him he couldn’t come home and give it to her. Now, they don’t even know they have it. He asked her what she expected him to do and she told him to go to their cabin. So he goes to the cabin and tells her he has no food, so she needs to bring him some. She takes sacks of food and leaves it in the drive so she won’t catch it. lol
Now they know they were negative, but she still is telling him he can’t come home until his 2 week quarantine because it might be a false negative.
My daughter told her she was crazy and she told her that her parents were in their 70’s and she didn’t want to take it to them. She told her well she could just not go see her parents for two weeks. Then she told her that her parents were ticking her off because they went to the grocery store, eye doctor and pharmacy, like they have no idea there is a killer disease out there just waiting to kill them.
Again my daughter told her she was nuts and it sounds like her parents are being a little more rational than she is. She said they were being nuts and that now today her Mom told her she was making some chicken soup for her neighbor who was sick. That she ordered her she could not take it to them and her Mom told her she wasn’t taking orders from her today and to just calm down before she gave herself a panic attack.

She probably does. Thankfully they’re not close friends, just friends through their husbands’ racing.
As my daughter says, “I can talk to her on occasion at the track and sometimes she’s actually funny to talk to on the phone, but I would never hang out with her.”
That’s what she told me after one night at the track and she told me her entire life story and a lot of stuff I did not care to know and I told my daughter that woman is a few bricks shy of a load.

I may sound racist pointing at the Chinese but they, as did/are the Russians, studying weaponizing hemorrhagic fevers. The rumors before my retirement were that the Russians had succeeded and they were, technologically, way behind where the Chinese are now.
There have been rumors of Chinese medical teams digging around in rather unexplored (by the West) in Africa looking for novel diseases still buried in the underbrush so there’s no telling what their dual-use bioindustry has come up with.
We know the Chinese have had a deep interest in biowarfare since the overran the Japanese 731 facilities after WW2, they look at the bioweapons as the perfect poor man’s nuclear weapon with the added benefit of their use carrying plausible deniability – just ask Whoopi Goldberg.

I’m trapped in a web of idiocy. I decided to use expedia.com top make a flight reservation. I tried to book the flight the first time and got a ‘we cannot complete your reservation’ message. Thinking that as there was a ‘just 4 seats left’ message on the flight I tried to adjust the time a wee bit to another flight and got the same message. Thinking there was something wrong I went to another airport and booked a flight with another airline.
I went to check my email and lo, there were two messages from expedia.com telling me I now have two booked flights. I go back to expedia and try to cancel the bookings using their cancellation procedure (it had been less than an hour since the bookings) and their cancellation system isn’t working. I try to call the airlines and they’re phone system is shut down as it’s overloaded…I call expedia and I’ve been on hold for over 2 hours (was on hold 1/2 hour previously until their call queue died) waiting for customer *service*.
I did immediately call Amex (card I used) and as we’ve been with them for nearly 40 years they put a block on the payments. If I can’t get ’emon the line that should get their attention.
