Security of Federal elections. I definitely support voter ID laws, but I have been torn about the idea of a Federal ID or Federal ID law for elections. It is clear to me that the states have the right and responsibility to run elections in their jurisdictions. Why didn’t this occur to me?
I think that a voter ID requirement for election of those to Federal office (President and Vice President) would be completely legal. The identification required should ensure that the person voting is a citizen and meets all legal requirements for voting. Restrictions or regulations on voting are legal as long as there is no restriction based upon gender, race etc. For instance, a state may forbid those convicted of a felony from voting.

I totally support voter ID at every level of elections. And the fingertip-in-the-purple-ink to go with it. The bogus argument that blacks can’t obtain ID is the left’s bigotry of low expectations.

They went around and asked blacks in NY if they had IDs and they all looked at the guy asking the question like he was nuts and said, “Of course.” They were insulted that he asked.

Thing is, you need an ID to collect benefits from the state/Feds, cash checks, do almost any kind of medical or financial transaction and, if stopped by the police, you are required to be able to identify yourself.
All states issue ID cards to non-drivers and the state issued ID serves as positive ID. It’s almost impossible for someone nowadays to conduct personal business without ID so the excuse that you don’t have one is suspicious at best. We had the option were we to stop someone to arrest if the person couldn’t IMD him/herself to our satisfaction an option everyone in the innercity is familiar with. You can just go down to the DMV and get one, less than $30 but then try getting anything done without one.
About the biggest issue is voting as if you don’t require a voter to have ID then that voter can be handed a piece of paper with a non-voting name from each polling place and driven to any number of them to vote multiple times – just like they do in Louisiana. I see no issue with voters having to have to have ID unless the detractors have a nefarious motive in mind.

The problem is that in many states a driver’s license or state ID does not ensure that the bearer is a citizen and eligible to vote.
