Morning Stella and all! The Alaskan flat tire photo put a smile on my face this morning. I’ve seen similar photos but not this one. What I can tell from the photo is that it is not particularly cold (no warm hats or face coverings on the people, no booties on the dogs) and what the dog is actually doing is trying to cool off. When the sled stops for a few minutes, they will roll in the snow to get it into their fur. Interesting to note that the two dogs in the foreground have CHAIN necklines. Yowza. That means they are serious line-chewers. Dogs get really excited about going out. The dog yard erupts in barking and frenzied jumping around when the sled comes out and dogs start getting harnessed and hooked up. Many dogs, while waiting for the full team to be assembled, will chew on whatever they can reach–the neck line, the tug line, the gangline, their harness, or the dog next to them. Most neck line chewing can be prevented by using a special thin rope that has a plastic-coated cable in the center of it. The fact that these two dogs have chain link for a neck line speaks to their determination to chew.

The other thing I notice is that this is probably a paid tour dog mushing experience. The two ladies in the front are clients (who likely know nothing at all about dog mushing) and the guy in the follow sled (or he may be standing on the runners, I can’t tell) is the real musher.

Dog mushing fever is beginning to build around here. The intermediate distance races are happening every weekend, and it is only 2 months until Iditarod. Yahoo! Go dogs!
