Most assuredly something to aspire to.

I found a photo of Bishop John H. Vincent (a Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church; born in Tuscaloosa, AL) and he looks amused at something…makes me think he was possessed of a happy demeanor…and that his beliefs added to that….

“Education, once the peculiar privilege of the few, must in our best earthly state become the valued possession of the many.”

Parishioners wrote Bishop Vincent asking what books he recommended to tide them over the long winters. So he developed a four-year correspondence course called the Chautauqua Scientific and Literary Circle. After ten years, 100,000+ people had enrolled. One article stated, “In an age when few colleges or universities accepted women, and opportunities for higher education for married women and businessmen were almost nonexistent, Vincent’s correspondence course filled a deep need.”

A particularly American thinker, I reckon.

Happy New Year one and all, and thanks to Stella especially for a haven and a place to share ideas, songs, poetry, politics, and weather, as well as all the more important things like prayers, cats, and dog stories. Hope your day is a great one!

Happy New Year, everyone. 🙂 My resolution is to get in better shape, along with losing a little weight. I don’t expect to be 30 again, but I don’t have to be this out of shape. Getting out of bed should not be a major exercise of the day.

Have you tried yoga? It’s a nice easy way to ease your body into a healthier mode.

LOL I did many, many years ago. Back then I found it frustrating. I much preferred high impact aerobics. It about killed my knees, so I went to low impact aerobics. But, I agree, stretching is where I will have to start now.

A number of years ago before I retired I wrenched my back but I still went to work each day. The difficulty was getting out of bed.

Mom was still ambulatory then but not in the best of shape and I hated to call her to help me literally out of the bed. So I tied a sheet to the brass footboard and pulled myself to a sitting position, then gingerly turned to put feet on floor and get up. Worked like a charm. You do what you gotta do! LOL!

Thanks, litenmaus! Another story about my back at this same time. I rode the bus to/from work for a number of years. There was a Latina who was a passenger each evening and got off at my stop to transfer to another bus. I saw she was always reading a book. Sitting closer to her one day I noted it was a Spanish Bible. She looked up and smiled at me. I pointed at the Bible and gave a thumbs up.

Then in broken English (apparently having noticed that I was struggling with the back problem), she asked if my back hurt. I nodded affirmatively. When the old bus pulled to our stop, she stood by making sure I was going to make it down the stairs. We went to the street corner and started to cross together. She reached out and touched my back and said she’d pray that I’d be healed.

I thanked her and continued on walking the three blocks to my home. By the time I got there, the muscle pain and stiffness was gone and didn’t return. Believe it or not, that’s the truth.

The interesting thing is that I never saw her again.

    Hey Grandma! What’s for supper?

    I’ve got black-eyed peas
    As pretty as can be.
    A big pot of collards,
So good they’ll make you holler!
    A pone of cornbread,
Full of onion, jalapenos and cheese,
And a pan of spicy fried pork chops,
    All crispy, hot and He’s
    on his way home!

I swear, I started cooking this at 7:00 am, and it’s almost done!

What are yall’s favorite thing to eat for New Year? Anything That you always ate growing up?

My mother’s people were from Paris TX & Shreveport, and we ate cabbage and black-eyed peas EVERY New Year’s Day of my growing up. Mama said eat poor on NY Day, eat rich the rest of the year! Forthuately, Czar also likes these foods, so he fell easily into the pattern.

LIVE from Baghdad as protest outside US embassy resumes
    Streamed live 8 hours ago
    Ruptly

Ruptly is live from Baghdad on Wednesday, January 1, as a protest in front of the US embassy compound enters its second day.
According to reports, security forces at the US embassy fired tear gas early on Wednesday, attempting to disperse protesters that spent the night outside the embassy compound.
On Tuesday, protesters angry about US air strikes on Iranian-backed militia in Iraq and Syria managed to storm the building and set parts of the premises ablaze.

These “protesters” are all in “The Green Zone” which was formerly a VERY secure area… even while savage war factions roamed the streets of Baghdad just after US forces moved in. It is NOT beyond reason to expect the Green Zone to be secured again?

FWIW I agree with what Trump is doing now to protect the Embassy.
My concern (also expressed next door) is that Trump was not out front when the strikes against Iraq and Syrian targets were announced. I don’t know of course, but there is the Douglas Macgregor on Fox narrative that …..Trump is being “skillfully misinformed”

They can say what they want but EVERY President is, to one degree or another, skillfully’ manipulated by the Intel agencies, DoD ot State. The President has to rely on his briefings every morning, he isn’t out front gathering it himself, it’s processed up the line from ‘farmer’ through the various analysts and it’s not unusual for ious handlers to process it to some degree before it hits the table.

The attacks in Syria are more than what we’re being told. We and Israel have hit some major Iranian-proxy sites without this kind of reaction from Iran. Are they just finally getting pissed or did those attacks target/hit something/someone big?

Iran has been moving larger and more modern weapons into Syria for its proxies to use in Syria but also against Israel. Israel has been targeting and hitting Iranian IRBM and tactical missile assembly and storage sites to the point that Iran’s moving important sites closer to Russian bases so Russian ADA can keep Israel at bay but they can’t put all of it under the Russian umbrella – I’m betting we hit something that really frosted Iran’s mug.
