I like the holidays and spending time with family, but it’s also nice when they’re over. lol

I even braved the stores this evening, only because I was asked to go. I guess everyone did their black Friday last night and/or this morning because there really wasn’t that many people. When I see the Angel Trees or equivalent to Angel Trees I always look through and try to find one, I’m left flabbergasted this year though. Kids and/or their parents asking for X-box, Playstation, I-pads, I-phone 11, 50″ tvs. A few actually mentioned clothes or shoes, but particular brands like some kind of new Nike shoe. Where are the poor kids at that want/need clothes, shoes, coats, toys? Some of these kids asking for these extravagant gifts were 6, 7, 8 years old or so they claimed. So not much older than my grandkids who have asked for race cars, race car tracks, power rangers, books, unicorns and horses.
    People have no shame anymore.

Morning Michelle 🙂 !! Terrific to see you!

I no longer participate in a Christmas Gift Charity here, I know enough families from my volunteer work that it is easy to give to a family that I know isn’t spending the “saved on Christmas gifts for my children” money of booze, drugs and cigarettes.

Hello lovely. This is the first year I have seen it be so bad, where you can’t find one kid that is really needy on the tree.
A lady that worked there said people weren’t as giving this year, that usually during black Friday half the names are taken. I told her that maybe it’s not that people aren’t giving, it’s that people are like me aren’t going to buy kids extravagant gifts, if they want things like this obviously they aren’t too needy.

I am not going to vent too much, but I decided after seeing someone return toys for in store credit that I would only give to people that I know.

We have a girl here with 3 kids, the last one born in a homeless shelter, the girl is making very real efforts to give them a good home, the dad is out of the picture (prison) and the main reason that they ended up in the situation that they’re in.

The little family is now in a small home, and things are moving in the right direction. Mom has issues both mental and physical but she is a children first mom. She will get as much as children this Christmas. Legitimate needs and some wants as far as a few of us can do.

First thing that came to mind was our SO’s yearly Xmas dinner hand out. The Sheriff would take funds/donations and put together a huge load of complete turkey dinners and distribute them to families in need.

One year, as we were putting the boxes together, we came up short a load of frozen turkeys. The Sheriff bought and counted each one so he knew they’d come in, they were now missing. He started a search and tracked their movement the short time between their arrival and assembly into the meal boxes…he didn’t want to think it but the only explanation was that some deputy(s) had stolen some. He got all of the deputies together who’d had access to them, and it was not many, and grilled them. Sure enough, that’s what had happened.

Here it was, law enforcement officers stealing food from people who didn’t have it. Most of the birds were returned and he bought enough out of his pocket to replace the ones not returned. There was some in-house punishment and at least one lost his job – though many of us felt they all should have lost their jobs – but a lot of intra-office trust was gone. It was handled in-house, public never heard about it, the loss of trust in-house was bad enough but as we’d hadc another…incident…not long before it was felt it best not damage the public’s already tenuous trust any more than it was.

Sad when the people we trust disappoint us.

I participate (or I did until a couple of years ago) in a program that brings Thanksgiving dinner to families. Any family that asks.

Organization decided to put their efforts into helping “migrants” read Muslims and “Compassionate Release” I waved goodbye and haven’t looked back.

Much of the helping we did was political. Just as the old Sheriff’s mass lunches for the elderly on Thanksgiving and Xmas where there were about as many members of the press as diners. The pols love to be seen as warm, fuzzy helpers , seens as sympathetic vice political.

It’s frustrating to me, I remember when they first started the angel trees, they screened the parents of kids to make sure only needy kids were allowed to get their name and wishes on the tree. Then kids would ask for coats, shoes, blankets and if they added a toy it would be one toy like a doll, truck, etc. Then I learned about 10 years ago they were no longer screening, but you could still pick through and find a kid you tell was in need. I guess even that is in the past now.

On FB people are always asking for free stuff for their kids. One particular woman did it constantly, then I would see people making plans with her to give her clothes, strollers, car seats, toys, etc. Later I would see her listing clothes, strollers, car seats, etc. for sale. I called her out on it once and she claimed she was given more than she needed and I asked her why she took it if she didn’t need it and at least why isn’t she donating it or giving it to someone who does need it instead of trying to make money.
I tried to warn another woman and she ignored me and then found out the same day she gave her a bunch of stuff she had it listed on another group for sale.
I think she finally ran out of suckers, because now when I see her posting for free stuff, nobody ever comments or they tell her to get a job.

I never want any child to go without at Christmas, but I see no need for video games that cost hundreds of dollars or I-phones, I-pads and tablets.

My son in law and younger grandson went shopping at several stores Friday morning. They said there wasn’t much of a crowd and they didn’t buy anything.

I think that old ‘magic’ has gone out of Christmas shopping, it’s less of a pleasurable event than a shark feeding frenzy. Some years back I was in DC with a friend before Christmas and it was almost Hollywood. Dark, snowy, cold, brightly lit streets full of shoppers. We stopped for dinner and it was almost Dickensonian with the almost candle light and happy shoppers.

Fast forward a few years and the full conspicuous consumption/feeding frenzy ethos has taken hold. We had officers working details guarding stores as throngs lined up overnight for Black Friday opening specials, working inside after opening to prevent fights over scarce stocks of the latest toys, special elevated booths in mall parking lots so that officers could try and prevent muggings/carjackings as customers navigated the lots.

I’m doing what a lot of folks are, sitting in the easy chair with a drink and ordering online. The hassle just ain’t worth it any more. Parking, crowds, the consumer animus driving the shopping herd to forage, ain’t the old Christmas. Best in my case to stay home, pull up a warm cat or a dog and let them fingerses do the shoppin’.

Local news here said shopping was light yesterday. More deals in days leading up to Thanksgiving and online was the reason given, probably ATM least partially true.

You couldn’t melt me down and pour me into stores on Black Friday.
