I loved the Subaru commercil to adopt an unusual dog on October 22nd. They showed old dogs, funny looking dogs and dogs with three legs. Reminding us the vaue of all dogs!

And that dog in the helmet is our BD’s twin. She’s the one we rescued who’d come within hours of dying from dehydration/starvation. Someone had thrown her out and she didn’t know how to hunt. She’d become so weak from lack of food that she couldn’t make it down to the river she’d lain down next to to die. I thought she was dead, drove right by her, but when I looked in the rearview she had just enough energy to raise her head. I still don’t know how she knew to do that, when I saw her and went back she didn’t have the energy to move, she was pure skin and bones and her fur was dead white.
She responded and she’s been with us for years – she’s the one who tangled with the feral hog and has at least three moccasin bites. She guards the farm and our GGS (she’s been with him since he was a pup), she’s one of our dog heros.

I had one a long time ago, beautiful well behaved dog and smart as a whip.

Czarina has a bone-deep fear of them. I think I’ve told the story of how she ended up in a house full of blood-crazed rehab dobies with me when we visited one of my old friends…things were chilly for a while after that.

I was in a similar situation. However, they weren’t dobies, they were chihauhaus. May ankles were all that suffered.

Yes a bad experience like that can sour you,

Whatever that experience was long predated this encounter.

completely understood. Mine was sent as a new born lamb. And she would have protected me from a dozen rampaging lions.

My friend had the dobies behind a child gate up a hallway and they anxiously pop their heads back and forth over the ghate staring at us. My friend was telling us how all 4 of these dobs had bitten their owners and/or someone else and my friend was rehabing them.
At some point during the conversation my friend got so carried away discussing her success she…perhaps without thinking…let them all out into the living room with us so that we could see how friendly they were. They were wriggling and squirming around us, pushing each other out of the way to rub up against us, a couple were popping their jaws like excited dobs do, they were excited to have guests. Did I mention that all of them were LARGE! Thiswasbacki in the South Florida Borong/Warlance’s Proud Clarion days.
At some point I looked over at Czarina (I was avoiding it) and her usual northern European hue had turned to a whiter shade of pale and there was no sign she was breathing. The dobs had zeroed in on her as if they could smell…she says ‘taste’…her apprehension. They were friendly and attentive to me but they were like white on rice to her.
At some point during the conversation my gathered them up and put them behind the gate again and Czarina slowly began breathing and getting her normal pallidness back. On the other hand it was a while before she began speaking…to me…again.

People would sometimes ask me how I trained my labs to chase a ball and bring it back to me. I would say I didn’t, they trained me to throw the ball for them to chase. LOL
