    My friend enlisted me to set out all her Halloween decorations when I was at her house the other day. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out. She had huge boxes of pumpkins and cats, etc. She just gushes every time I talk to her now. LOL I have to admit it did look pretty good.

    Well, I’ve had better days start in better ways.

    Just before 4 AM my phone rings…no number, no name. I just dozed back off to sleep and WHAM!, the cold front hits. All of that hi-altitude super dry and cold air slamming into the 74-degree warm and extremely humid air – thunder, lightening, rain and driving wind.

    The 1-1/4 of rain we received in about 45 minutes hit the septic so out I went into the remaining wind and rain, at least it was still in the lower 70s. On the way back in there was a young water moccasin slithering thru the water on the patio, looking for some place in the plants there to set up until this blew over. I saw him by his movement rather than color, he was a young ‘un, still had that juvenile slimy greenish/yellowish/tanish color and was only about 20 inches long.

    I get back in and nervous-dog decides she wants to be in the bedroom with us, the storm’s a bit much. So I put a towel on the floor next to my side of the bed (bitchy old dog sleeps on Czarina’s side) and she settles in…then as I’m dozing off, all damp and chilly, I can feel herb sneeeeeeeeak up on the bed and sloooooooowly settle in between us. She doesn’t touch us, doesn’t want us to know she’s there, she just doesn’t want to be alone.

    I get up after another few hours of sleep and it’s 52-degrees, 10 MPH wind and more rain. Back out to the septic, return wetish and chilledish. At the door id BD dog, she’s just gottagottagotta go out – she goes just far enough, takes care of business and comers in. I’m toweling off Dog 1 and the bitchy old dog has just gottagottagotta go out…not so much to ‘do’ anything but she’s desperate to go out and answer BD’s peemail. Toweling off 2nd dog.

    Not to be outdone the B&W cat’s stretching up the door jam, writhing about, meowing and demanding to go out. Not having had my 1st cuppa coffee yet, mind’s not completely defuzzed, I try and explain to the cat that it’s cold, raining and windy – cat’s having none of that. I open the door, cat rushes outside and realizes it’s cold, raining and windy. He walks around the plants as if he’s looking for someplace to shelter in place, turns and gives me that’why the %&%$#@ didn’t you tell me it was cold, raining and windy’ look and rushes back inside. Toweling off a cat.

    I now have my hot cafe au lait and I’m sitting on my recliner. There’s a damp dog on my right, a damp cat on my left and a damp and slightly kennel-smelling me in the middle. So starts Halloween.

      Came to mourn cutting off 2 ft of hair yesterday, but think i will slink off like that snake now

          Yup, 2 ft of hair, my 5th donation for cancer patients – i could sit on the ends. Was a major meltdown for me, till i read about your morning.
          Upthread there is some good JD with very little sugar to replace the calories you burned this morning, and you’ve earned it. Gee wiz, what a start to a day!

            Aren’t you just a doll, an angel for those who need wigs after cancer treatment. I know how important a wig can be. My friend has another friend she has known for 20 years or more. She had chemo and was completely bald and wouldn’t even let my friend see her without her wig.

            That’s great, I’ve seen the stories about those who donate hair for wigs for cancer patients, good for you. I spent too long with military hair and even this long after retirement if it gets more than 3/4 inch long my skin crawls. Best I could do is stay drunk for about a month (that’s not my ‘best’) after it hits the 1/2 inch mark and donate for someone who’d like a grey buzz cut.

            Our choosing to cut about 2 acres of the forest out for the ‘lawn’, leaving the rest of the trees, had led to one of those homesteads where you are never quite sure what’s going to be on the porch or grounds when you go outside – much like in New Orleans but at least you can shoot and eat the critters here.

        I don’t kill our snakes, they have a job and as long as they don’t actively tangle with me I’m OK with them. We have tons of mice and field rats and from the size of some of these moccasins and copperheads they’re doin’ jes fine.

        I usually see them, mostly babies or juveniles, on the patio before hibernation as they soak up warmth. I just watch where my feet are going on the ground – all of the time -and I’m OK. BD, our yellow lab/hound mix, actually hunts them down and kills them. She’s pretty good at it and has only been bitten a few times. They’re her ‘job’ so she takes the moccasin patrols for both of us.

    Now in days long past I’d be getting my uniform ready as we’d be doing the security at Ann Rice’s Halloween party at her St Elizabeth party place. That was the party place in the city at days gone by and if you got an invite you were lucky. We couldn’t drink while the party was going on and we were on duty (we could eat though) but when it ended we could make up for lost time. Them wuz the days.

    Here is our Halloween decoration. Czar & GGS bought it and Czar decided to “dress” it according to our favorite ghost movie, “Beetlejuice”! It sits on our dining room table. The funniest thing is, it has a button which makes it howl! Makes the dogs nuts!

    I had a young person ask me why I hated socialism and communism, I told her that I would relate to her something a friend of mine told me when I worked with him during my sojourn in Scotland.
    My friend is Romanian and grew up under the communist government run by Nicolae Ceaușescu. His family fled to the UK shortly after they dragged old Nocolae and his wife out and killed them. He explained it to me this very simple way.

    He said to think of the worst person I knew. Then assume that person’s future success depended on him hating me.
    I said that I got it – I picked the person.
    Then he said to assume that person was empowered to control every aspect of my life.
    He said that was what living with communism is like.

    She said that it didn’t have to be like that.

    I said that I challenged my friend about that very thing and his answer was that it was always like that because only people like he described could and would do the things necessary to survive within the communist structure – and the higher up they are, the more ruthless and corrupt.

    I don’t think she got it. She and other young people like her have this freakishly childish view of collectivism. It’s not a bunch of toddlers cheerfully sharing toys at daycare – it is an open air prison.

    Well, today was my b’day. Poured cold rain all day, snow is forecast for tonight, and Congress voted a fake impeachment on the only President for whom i worked after Richard Nixon.
