I need something to go with the most excellent jar of pickled asparagus I just opened. Bacon, wet scrambled eggs, and biscuits with ham gravy should do it.

We have a bevy of small mom and pop stores scattered along the rural hiways out here that open about 3:30 to 4 AM to catch the folks going to work at distant points or at logging/construction that needs them early-early. I used to get up around 5 AM to get to work 7 or 7:30 but most of these folks are long gone before I’m in the shower. Luckily I was a Federal employee so I’d just punch in and then go to breakfast in the cafeteria – can’t get into trouble for slacking off if you eat with the supervisory staff…

Whoops, forgot to mention. These stores have little kitchens and they crank out sausage, egg, sausage and egg biscuits and sandwiches. Folks commuting an hour or more or working logging pick up breakfast and coffee and maybe something from the ready-cooked table for lunch. Starting about 3 AM you can smell the fresh coffee and cooking as you drive down the roads. They don’t need to advertise, its tree..tree…tree…cow…lights on and breakfast smell…tree…tree…

Half of our company cooks were Mexican so we got some good breakfasts out in the field – back in the days when we still had cooks who cooked.

No more organic cooks, stuff comes in a bag or, in the cantonment, you eat at a common mess serviced by a contractor now. Cooks don’t feel the need to answer to the folks they feed.

We plan a drive up to the Smokies this weekend or next, hoping for some fall color. Almost no trees are coloring up here, sounds like what czar describes where he is. Turn brown and fall off.

It’s been several, as in four or five at least, years since we had great fall color. I am so disappointed. If I had known it was going to be this bad I would have hitched a ride with my son the trucker up through New England.

I’m looking out my window and seeing a bit of fall color. We have a lot of pines, some of which die every year…not sure of the reason…and the dying/dead sort of blend in with what is actual autumn colors.

I registered along with my senior classmates while we were in K’town. If we had no local choice of a draft board, and many didn’t, you were registered with Local 100 in DC. Many of the dependent students overseas were registered with Local 100 and as local boards were made up of local folks the overseas kids they didn’t know were usually the first ones to get drafted. Why not draft some 18 year old in Germany instead of your bowling buddy Mel’s lid?

That also probably went a long way towards explaining why SGT Snuffy’s kid in Germany got drafted while Senator Smith’s spawn never even got looked at. The number of military dependent sons whom were drafted far exceeded the numbers of Congressmen’s kids, far far far exceeded.

Mmmm…I can just see the female heads out there in La La Land nodding in agreement and thinking I’m gonna use that argument next time I see one of those anti-woman anti-abortion-until-the-day-of-birth conservatives.

Good morning ladies and gentlymen of Stella’s Very Own Place.
Hope your day is going well. It is wet and cold on the North Coast.
4:20 a.m. this morning lightning hit so close to my house it blew the kitchen breakers and sulfur smell everywhere. Still tryna figure out God’s message in that one.

Anyways, should anyone care for some deep philosophical thoughts, have a listen to Peter Thiel with Peter Alexander at the Hoover Institution last month. Stephan Moleneaux is a piker compared to this guy.

The discussion covers a mid-boggling array of subjects – religion (reasonable, and unreasonable, both required), Pope Benedict’s Regensburg speech, Thiel’s conservative Catholic friends (two words for them – Pope Francis), technology and Silicon Valley (once all light, now very dark), politics, investing, college educations (a waste), Pres Trump’s legacy (China!), the upcoming election, and very much more.

Have a listen, if so inclined. I listened twice, it was so good. Recorded 5 Sep 2019 47:25

Very interesting development, seeing as the security system we sold the Saudis failed miserably in their oil fields…that drone attack was very sophisticated and I’m wondering if the terrorists had some inside information about the quirks of our system….

      • czarowniczy says:

That was a lot about little. I believe we’d discussed that the drones used were not only too small, flew too low and were stealthy, an asymmetrical attack defended by conventional forces.

The Pentagon doesn’t like asymmetrical, it’s talked about it and the various military schools have written about it for decades but Pentagon types see themselves still as Cold Warriors, standing on leading armor elements as they crash headlong into a conventional armor force. Look at Afghanistan and Iraq, the latter after the initial invasion, we were in Vietnam 2.0 with our air and ground conventional forces fighting a largely guerilla Moslem insurgency. In Afghanistan we were fighting an irregular force we’d trained to fight the Russians.

The Patriots can’t find stealthy drones flying low and slow through radar ground clutter. Even had the radar-controlled ground guns have picked them up the question is how many were there and how many could they have engaged? Unspoken is WHO was manning the defense systems? Was it the systems fault or were the crews Saudis who were…distracted? Note we hear NOTHING about who was manning the systems. Tales of Mideastern military mishandling of equipment were provided them are legend, it’s equipment our culture in vented and produced and we’re providing it to another cultute that is…to be kind…less than technological. Who was manning the system.

Our people go in to a situation with technology blazing, wowing our allies with flashing lights and the smell of ozone but it doesn’t faze the Mideasterners. Note they dote on low tech, boots to ground stuff. The Iranians had guys in boats affixing WWII tech mines to oil ships. The AQ guys used a ramshackle fishing boat rowed right up to the Cole to take it out and they’re still using WWII Scud/V-2 technology that slips right by our latest whiz-bang hi-tech.

This Pentagon refusal to deal with ground-level stuff with ground-level methodology is legendary, if they can’t throw billions of dollars at the companies they hope will hire them when they retire they won’t move. The other side sits back, discoveres the holes in our systems and looks for the easiest way to exploit them.

Chinese are really running out ahead of us here, they have fleets of various ‘drones’ designed to try and blunt our various tactical and strategic advantages. We’d be way ahead of where we are today had not the USAF been so reluctant to entertain any kind of unmanned aircraft, thereby stymying a lot or R&D.

I like the microwave and laser anti-drone systems, they’ll be tied to radars specifically designed to pick them up from just-off-the-ground level to altitudes that regular AA systems operate at…but you can bet there’ll be drone systems to counter that too.

I remember looking at drones the old BLOC operated. Many were thinly disguised as crop dusters and the like but their clear military use was to spray chemical compounds to hinder NATO actions. Av lot of that went by the wayside when the Soviet Union fell buy we soldiered on and did most of the groundwork for the Chinese and others.

The unstable crane at the flattened Hard Rock Hotel moved again, further unspecified ‘fluids’ found at the site have been tested and found to be human, the fire department is on the cusp of changing the rescue to a recovery annnnnnnd…we have a possible tropical system that may hit this weekend bringing wind and rain.

The mayor’s out there trying to talk engineer/fire department professionalese – not doing all that well – trying to impress us with her deep grasp of the system. What we’re hearing is basically they’re praying that the tropical system doesn’t come close enough to drop that crane and that the crane doesn’t fall on its own before they figure out a way to stabilizer, secure and remove it. Oh yeah, that it doesn’t rain so much that the rain doesn’t overcome the friction holding the slumped floors together.

The search for straw dogs goes on.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.
