    And here I was mentioning just last night how the Trump organization backed out of a hotel dealin NOLA so fast they left a vacuum. I was reminded by a story on the nightly news about the new Hard Rock Hotel being built right downtown and how quickly and swimmingly it was going along.

      Funny little incident from 1970-71 or so…I was just coming back from lunch and spotted Richard Beymer sitting in our lobby. He was very nice looking in person, tall and thinner than in WEST SIDE STORY. I went into my office, put my purse away and went back out to talk to him.

      Introducing myself, I asked who he was there to see. He named a casting director and we discussed the role he was reading for (don’t remember which). I told him how enjoyable WEST SIDE STORY was and that I’d seen it four or five times. He just looked at me and said, “Whatever for? I didn’t do my own singing, you know.” Hahahahaha!

        Just now I decided to look up Beymer to see if he’s still around. He is and will be 82 in February. I also saw a quote from him about WSS which probably explains his odd remark to me…”Beymer later said he ‘was miserable in West Side Story. I didn’t know enough at the time because I lacked certain knowledge in acting… I came out ridiculous. I didn’t stand up for what I should have and I didn’t know enough. The blame should be on me’.” Actors!

        I remember one of my co-workers, a woman who’d worked in the film industry for many years, said one time, “Just think of them as children.”

          Did any of the actors sing their own songs? Natalie Wood didn’t…perhaps it was Marni Nixon who did…she used to do the voices for a lot of female stars. I think George Chakiris and Russ Tamblyn did sing. They all did their own dancing, of course, but whether they had numerous takes because some were not naturally gifted, I don’t know.

          The film itself was mesmerizing. My college boyfriend and I came in to Los Angeles to see it about six months after it premiered. Ordinarily everyone gets up and walks out when the closing credits come on. Very few people did in Graumann’s Chinese that night. We just all sat in our seats listening to the incredible music and remained in the spell.

          Afterwards, we walked up Hollywood Boulevard to a music shop and bought the sheet music for a couple of songs. Mine was “Maria.” I had it around for years, but eventually gave it to a friend who was a professional singer. As I recall, the sheet music had the photos on the front of the actors who were in the Broadway play.

            P.S. Except people in the film industry, few fans knew the actors didn’t sing their own songs in those days. It definitely wasn’t advertised. So perhaps Beymer thought he was telling me something I didn’t know. Not until years later did the actual singers have permission to tell their stories. I think it was in their contracts that they couldn’t talk about it.

              P.P.S. LOL! I’m still trying to think of the the female Broadway singer who starred as Maria. I’m trying not to look it up…it believe it was Carol Lawrence and she was married to the actor who played Lancelot in CAMELOT on Broadway whose name I can’t remember. But he became very famous and had a crazy-great voice. Now I AM GOING TO HAVE TO LOOK IT UP or I’ll be nuts by bedtime…hahahaha!

                P.P.P.S. Yes, it was Carol Lawrence and she married Robert Goulet in 1963 after both WEST SIDE STORY and CAMELOT debuted on Broadway.

                I swear there was a time I wouldn’t have had to look any of this up…hahahahahaha! The old brain is creaky now.
