Tomorrow Czarina and I take our GGS to his first Oktoberfest for a real German meal. His Momma’s from a German family – her gramma immigrated – and GGS looks like an Aryan recruiting poster so it should be fun.

We’re taking a couple of my older but cheaper ‘steins’ for us – maybe one for him too. Don’t know what Dr Pepper tastes like coming out of a stein but that’s his problem. Biggest issue is that he is a…picky…eater, it’s a fight getting him to eat anything but processed crap and the main dish is a schlachteplatte so he may have the traditional Oktoberfest der Hamburger instead. Baby steps…baby steps…

Introduce him to some German pastries like the little spicy, iced German gingerbread cookies. We loved them at Christmas. Yummy! My mother’s side of the family was commonly called by the misnomer of Pennsylvania Dutch (German).

The misspelling of Pennsylvania Deutsch. We have a few centuries-old German cookie molds, nothing you’d actually use any more but they make nice ‘hangers’.

This time a year ago I discovered spaetzle and you tutored me on how to cook it. I gave away some excellent frozen broths and stocks I had made for it when we moved and emptied the freezer, but I must still have a half dozen bags of the noodles. There for awhile last fall I explored a little German cooking.

It’s odd that I’ve never taken much interest in learning to cook German dishes when that is my family tree, the part we know about, anyhow.

It has been so long since I cooked anything. I might not know how now, but I’ll get up to speed soon. The house we are buying if all continues to go well, has the most wonderful kitchen. It has a gas range, and it even has a huge stone fireplace on the end wall which faces the entry and living room. I foresee lots of happy and productive times in that kitchen.

Another way to prepare those noodles is to mix them with fried onions and buttered seasoned bread crumbs and bake in a casserole. Yum!

Paul Prudhomme was once asked what he thought Heaven would be. He replied that he
saw Heaven as a huge kitchen with the best of fresh ingredients, the best implements and the best gas range. He was then asked what he thought Hell would be like. Much the same, he said, but with an electric stove. Life’s too short for dull food.

When I tried Spätzele for the first time (with fried onions) I thought I had found out what manna from heaven was. In Switzerland they are called “Knöpfli” (little buttons) because the size is more like a squished pea (a little button) than the longer Spätzele. It’s key to rinse them immediately in cold, cold water after they are cooked, then drained on a cloth towel. Melt some butter to brown them. We sometimes add sautéed onions, and then spoon all of it into a buttered casserole dish, top with coarsely grated Gruyére cheese, and bake until melted and hot.

As a lad in Germany in 1981 (on a scholarship), I went to one of those medieval fairs outside of Regensburg and tried a one-inch slab of hot Leberkäs (like a giant baloney loaf) on a fresh roll with a dollop of mustard. And a beer. A giant beer. Mmmm.

I’ve attend *the* Oktorberfest in Munich several times. It’s fun for a few hours. So nice to see younger people in traditional costumes wandering around. Sturdy lads in Lederhosen and curvy gals in Dirndls — quite the sight to behold. The giant tents and staging areas serve great food and beer. If you do go, BRING EAR PLUGS. The oompah-oompah bands are deafening. You can hear them just fine with earplugs.

Pro tip: one of the most popular songs to sing along to at Oktoerfest anywhere (lately) is “Take me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver. It is a hoot to see Europeans (and other non-Americans) sing wildly and gleefully.

I was at an Oktoberfest down by the Chiemsee in the early 60s at a large local gasthaus where there were two tables full of WWII vets singing military songs. My grandfather (Wehrmacht Oberst) and Mom (Luftwaffe) and my Dad (8th Air Force) were there and it was a most Gemütlichkeit Fest I’d ever been to. No hard feeling any more, we ALL hated the Russians so we had that in common.

One of my aunt’s had an apartment just off the square where the fest parade started and close to the Festwiese so accommodations were never a problem. I loved the tents with the huge ovens that had hundreds of roasting chickens and the oxen roasting. I’d eat and drink myself senseless and start over again the next day. No one does excess better, not even New Orleans.

I still have a few bubble mass among my collection, bars balk at filling them, but my halb-krug go over just fine. I’ll be using my 1972 Munich Olympics lidded stein and Czarina will be using my Gasthaus Traunstein halb-krug. GGS will be using one of my BBK mugs from my high school days in the early 60s, it’s got memories (not impacted by the dead brain cells from its use) but I have replacements and he’s our GGS. I’m sure the meal will be somewhat Americanized as real blood sausages have problems getting commercialized. Eitrher way it beats the %$#@ out of Oktoberfest at Applebee’s.

BTW, I suggested the leftover spaetzle as a makkaroni und kase dinner. We’d sautee onions, toss in cooked real bacon, smoked ham and maybe a dusting of garlic…then bake it. We’d slice leftovers and gently cook them in butter or bacon grease (or both if you’re feeling particularly immortal) and serve with eggs for breakfast on a cold morning.

Opp[s…gotta go…appears to be someone in a black uniform from the Center for Science in the Public Interest at my door.

I went in 1999 to Munich’s Oktoberfest. My favorite food was the whole fish cooked over a charcoal pit. Ate it every day for a week. While waiting in the line, I also heard the Chuck Berry song, “You never can tell” over & over again because it was playing with the carnival ride next door.

Six ways to Sunday? Intelligence chiefs not only altered rules about firsthand knowledge to file whistleblower report…

One thing sure…we won’t take it nice and quiet like we did with Kennedy. One of my friends was working as a social worker for L.A. County. Upon hearing of the assassination, a guy in their office cheered, indicating it was about time. No one responded to him. I remember being shocked that no one said or did anything to the jerk.

After about 15 days or so, an idiot in my office started complaining he was tired of seeing the American flag at half staff. I let him have it verbally. If it had happened today, I still wouldn’t do anything to him physically (I don’t want to be put in jail). But I just might push everything off his desk for him.

I think the urban/suburbanites would find something else to blame – availability of guns and ‘hate speech’ would be my guess. The usual government psyops campaigns to redirect the public’s ire and attention would be rolled out too, never waste a good tragedy, especially if you’ve planned it.

I took a fall last night. I wanted to change the direction of the ceiling fan and used a dressing table seat to do it. It is more sturdy than any other piece of furniture I have. But, my knee collapsed when I put weight on it, and I fell. I have to believe there were angels that helped me. I ended up between my bed and a cedar chest. It is about the width of my body, but I didn’t hit my elbow, shoulder, or head on the chest. I really can’t explain how I ended up there. I just was left with a sore knee and a bruise on my other shin. I went to the chiropractor just to make sure everything was ok. I can’t believe I came out of the fall hurt so little.
