I have one, built it a few years ago and it’s a super short range (I keep it ~150 yards) deer and especially hog stopper. It compliments my .45-70 Marlin Guide Gun.
It was developed as an answer to the need for a short range gun to supplement the 5.56 round in house clearing and vehicle stopping at checkpoints. The M-4 wasn’t adequate in that it took multiple hits to stop bad guys and was totally useless in stopping vehicles that refused to stop. It also fires a heavy bullet at lower velocities and one hit will stop a bad guy or a car more effectively than a 5.56 of 7.62. It also is very effective silenced.
The other round developed was the .458 SOCOM, a necked cartridge whereas the Beowulf is a straight cartridge that headspaces on its rim. I have a SOCOM too and really prefer it as a cartridge that headspaces on its rim in a fighting rifle makes me a bit nervous as it doesn’t take much dirt in the chamber to jam. Hasn’t happened to me but it’s all about how comfortable you feel.
Both cartridges feed from a standard AR mag but as the round’s so big the 30-rounder only holds 10 rounds of .500 or .458, but then so what? All you need for the conversion is a new upper receiver and even then all you need is a new barrel and bolt – not bolt carrier, just bolt, so you can pop an upper on your lower and just go to town.

I had a friend with a matched pair of these in England. The “Purdey-est” guns I ever saw! They had been handed down in his family for over 100 years. I don’t reckon they would make a good battle weapon, but he would bring me an unfortunate brace of ducks quite often.

I just got back from seeing Downton Abby. We went to a 1:00 PM showing in the middle of the week, which usually means there are the two of us and maybe up to 6 others in the audience. This theater was nearly packed today. And, they have 9 showings today.
I was so excited that when the music started, I had to hold back tears. The familiar scenes of cars arriving, people bustling about, etc. is all there, only bigger, much bigger. I won’t go into any of the details of the story, but just that all of our favorite characters are there, and each has his own little story. This didn’t bog the main story down at all, though. There are many touching moments……….oh, and do bring at least one or two tissues.
The clothing was exceptional, of course, and seeing the dresses on the big screen made the details really visible. Also, the scenes of the Abby were to beautifully filmed, especially the outside and the grounds. I just can’t believe that anybody that sees this movie will be disappointed. And, to be honest, I can’t wait to see it again.
