      I can remember when I was young, my Grandpa lived not too far from a hatchery. He knew where they threw out the males, and he would look to see if any survived. He’d pick out a few and take them home and put them in a coop behind the house. He’s feed them until they got to be about 6-8 weeks old, and then butcher them for the freezer! I don’t think Nanny and Pa bought a grocery chicken for 40 years!

        Good on your family for cutting down on the waste and providing food for the table.

        Before reading this article, I never even knew the hatcheries killed the males. No wonder their wastefulness isn’t general knowledge. Their effort to keep it hidden means they know it’s a disgusting practice. The chickens could easily be sold or given to families who want to keep them for eventual consumption or to teach their children about poultry raising or for school projects, etc.

        The same thing happens to the foals of the pregnant horses cruelly used to produce hormones for human females in menopause. When I found that out re Premarin, I switched to plant-based HRT. My doctor thought it was unimportant what happened to the foals; so I changed doctors. I wouldn’t be surprised if kickbacks to prescribe it periodically appeared in his bank account.

        Seems to me I read the Premarin method of gathering hormones for human use is illegal in the U.S. So our pharmacies get it from Canada. Hopefully the U.S. has not now approved of it.

          Here in the deep south, They still have a bit of rooster fighting. It’s illegal now, but I’ve seen people with multiple pens in their back yard raising roosters for fighting. It’s hard to keep roosters. Once they get a certain age, they FIGHT! That’s why Pa would kill them so young. They also taste better young (tender too).

          I’ve kept chickens for years, and they are really fun. But, you have to do away with the rooster babies before they reach maturity. I kept Black Australorpes. I recommend that breed for anybody new to chickens. They are very docile, and my flock loved me as much as I loved them! My rooster was so sweet, he even helped raise the babies! I sure do miss my chickens.

            We had three Leghorns…a rooster named Cluck Cluck and two hens, one named Henny Penny. The other I don’t remember…the neighbor’s dog came over, broke into the pen and killed the poor thing. Anyway, Cluck Cluck would have nothing to do with any of us except my older sister. He followed her around like a pet dog.

            Eventually Henny Penny stopped laying and Dad disposed of both of them because us kids would NOT eat them.

    Happy Sunday friends. The move is over, thanks be to God. Now, to find a new home, a forever home, we hope.

    I’ve missed you guys, and hope to spend a little more time on the internet soon.

    Czar, saw your comment about the dogs and your GGS. How great it is to have such pals. When my oldest son was a toddler we got our first golden retriever. When our son was outside the dog would not let anyone he didn’t know in the yard. If he tried to leave the yard Clancy would get him by the strap of his overalls and pull him back.

    Now we have our middle son’s German shepherd. She had a bad experience with a child almost ten years ago when she was a very young dog and she has never liked kids at all. When we first got her I had a trainer come out to work with her and the oldest grandkids to teach both sides how to interact. Still, she stays far away from kids unless they are giving her a bone. However, my son’s boy, age two, she loves, and he loves her. He is the only child she has ever approached. We think maybe he smells right to her. Perhaps she considers him pack? Don’t know, but they have a bond.

      My BFF had a dog when her sons were little. He was one of those types that can be aggressive. She kept a close eye on him when her son’s friends came over because he would step in if they started to roughhouse. When she scolded her son one time, he got between them and growled at her. She said she never worried that anybody would hurt her kids while they had him.

      GSDs are dogs with long memories but like all dogs can’t make a deep subjective decision, they operate on a basal animal level – if ‘X’ was bad once then ‘X’ will be bad again. My fav example is dogs that have been beaten with a stick, you can get to a point where the dog trusts you implicitly but if you ever have a stick in your hand and raise it the dog will react. The dog may trust you but it doesn’t trust the stick and that’s what it’s reacting too.

      GSDs are great dogs, shepherds using them let the pups grow up in the sheep flocks, they take the sheep as family and protect them, GSDs in families are doing the same. They take new members, properly introduced, into the fold. I can remember Zauber
      adopting the GGS as a baby, shepherding him as he learned to walk. At about 3 GGS’s fav spot was a large mudhole in the driveway, we’d let him play out there with Z. One day we got a call from our neighbor, seems GGS and Daisy the border collie just decided to run over to their house to visit. He was over there, naked as a jaybird and covered in mud, with Daisy and Zauber circling him, not letting anyone get close. They weren’t aggressive, they knew the neighbors, they just stayed around GGS and between him and anyone who approached. I think that was more Z than Daisy as Daisy had lived over there before she came here and trusted them but Z set the tone.
