I loooooove choppers. I was a door gunner and have the crewmember badge on permanent orders, they’re sheer fun to fly in.
I was offered the chance by the Army when I first left the AF in ’69 to become a helicopter pilot…it was tempting. But I’d had two of my school friend killed in Hueys in VN and I knew that thousands of choppers were lost there (about 7000 in all) so I decided that maaaaaybe this wasn’t for me, especially as accident prone as I was.

Czar spent time in the door, I loved flying, and did not regret going to school. Now, I just have memories, good and sad. A few years ago working on that Huey with other RVN vets, was very proud to do a test flight…….once the bug bites, your hooked…..

I really don’t regret my decision all that much, I went in a new direction that I was and am happy in. Total chopper pilots lost was around 2100 and crew lost was 2700, not a really big number (unless you were one) compared to the 58,000+ but I’d hate to have been left seat and responsible for those behind me.

A friend of mine loved to fly helicopters wherever he was in the world. One weekend he gave a full-day party and took each one of the guests (10 or so) up for a fly around of Santa Paula, California where he lived and rented the copters. The rides were purposefully given BEFORE we had the afternoon luncheon spread in case someone got a tad ill…LOL!
Tremendous fun and gave me a real liking for flying in them.

My itchiest ride was, strangely enough, with my ex and grandson in Guatemala. We were there for the wedding of one of my sons and someone (one of my NOK?) arranged for us in an AH-6-style chopper.
I tried not to think that were in a Guat helicopter with an unknown maintenance record (“Hey, Juan, throw me the zeep tiez and wun hunnert and fourty-fife keeelomeeters an hour tape!”) and we’re flying in the mountains. Then again my ex was in front of me…

SAN FRANCISCO ā San Franciscoās Board of Supervisors wants to sanitize language in the criminal justice system.
In a proposal to the city and county of San Francisco, words like āfelon,ā āoffender,ā āconvictā and āparoleeā would be swapped for whatās described as people-first language ā phrases that strip any objectification or pejorative descriptions for more neutral and positive descriptors.
Some examples include changing āfelonā and āoffenderā to āreturning residentā or āformerly incarcerated person.ā A āparoleeā could be described as a āperson under supervision.ā āConvictā could be referred to as a ācurrently incarcerated person,ā while a ājuvenile offenderā or ādelinquentā would be described as a āyoung person impacted by the justice system.ā
The board noted that about 1 in every 5 Californians has a criminal record and the language that often accompanies those records can dehumanize and devalue the individual.
āLanguage shapes the ideas, perceptions, beliefs, attitudes and actions of individuals, societies and governments,ā the proposal states. āPeople-first language places the individual before the criminal record by using neutral, objective, and non-pejorative language.ā
The nonbinding resolution, sponsored by Supervisor Sandra Lee Fewer, passed last month in a near-unanimous vote. One supervisor was absent.
The San Francisco County district attorneyās Sentencing Commission, the Bay Areaās Reentry Council and San Franciscoās Youth Commission ā a group of 17 young people ages 12 to 23 ā passed resolutions supporting the changed language.
Mayor London Breed has not signed the proposal. Breed does not implement policies based on nonbinding resolutions.
āThat proposal was a non-binding urging resolution, and as a practice the mayor does not sign any resolutions of that kind. She is always happy to work with the board on issues around equity and criminal justice reform,ā said spokesperson Andy Lynch.
The proposal comes on the heels of Berkeley city leadersā passage of an ordinance to replace more than two dozen terms with gender-neutral words. The City Council voted in July to replace āmanholeā with āmaintenance hole,ā ācraftsmenā with āartisansā and to stop identifying firefighters and police officers by gender.

Idiot, imbecile & moron were used to identify people with intellectual disabilities until mid-20th century, when the words were changed to the less pejorative educable, trainable and profoundly retarded. Updated to be less pejorative developmentally disabled, changed to intellectually disabled, mentally challenged, differently abled, and finally “people” without mentioning anything else about them unless it was absolutely necessary.
Moral to the story, whatever you change the label to, it will become politically incorrect, or offensive to someone. And on and on it goes.

I have always thought it was ridiculous to change the name of things in order to get rid of the stigma that went with the old name. I mean handicapped means somebody has a problem that makes life harder for them. Changing the name of it doesn’t change what it is.
I try to be considerate. But, one time a woman came into a store with her husband and she had a white cane. My 3 yr old son wanted to know why. I tried to shut him up until we left the store, but he was glued to the spot and wanted an answer so wouldn’t shut up. So, I whispered to him that the woman used the cane because she was blind. Her husband came over to me and said, “She’s blind, not deaf,” in a very ugly tone. Sometimes you can’t win. And, you can never shut up a curious 3 yr old.
