The tomato article was posted with you and the others with green thumbs in mind. The best tomatoes I’ve ever eaten were home grown…and we didn’t even have to plant them…good thing since I’ve never had a green thumb. The plant just appeared in our front yard and produced lovely cherry tomatoes for years when all we did was water on occasion.
Have a great day!

Do you hollow out the tomatoes before stuffing or just quarter them as in Lucille’s photo? And then what? Melt cheese over the top? Or something else?
LikeLike
If I’m feeling particularly masochistic I peel the tomatoes before coring them and stuffing with some sort of salad – the just about all work, tuna, ham. potato, even green…
Back when my stomach was not as fussy I’d hollow out jalapenos and put seafood salad in. As Czarina’s not much for hot foods that was a sole endeavor (sole as me only, not the fish).

My goal today is to get the purple martin houses cleaned out & up in the attic. They won’t be back till February (vacationing in Brazil).

Try some Seeds of Change or Uncle Ben’s rice microwave packets. I’m having the Ben’s whole grain medley with quinoa, brown rice and garlic right now. If I’d had some fresh broccoli crowns to cut up, that would have been all the better. Avocado oil is great mixed in. Makes enough for two.

This morning I’m roasting tomatoes (halved) with onion, garlic, carrot, oil, thyme, salt and pepper. When they are cooked, I’ll remove the skins and whiz the whole thing up in the blender for pasta sauce. Easy and tasty.

That sounds great. Roma tomatoes?
LikeLiked by 1 person
No, just some cocktail size tomatoes that were over ripe. I just finished removing the skins and whizzing it up. Tastes great! Any kind of tomatoes works, but the more acid works best.

I like Romas as they’re cheaper and better than the table varieties in the store.
The growers usually flood the fields before harvest as the toms pick up the extra water and they’re sold by weight. Romas are a meatier tomato and make a better sauce, I haven’t roasted any tomatoes recently but when I do I find Romas crinkle up and disappear less.
If we can get them in the ground before the heat and wet hit next year I’d like to get some of the heirloom eggplant-size Italian paste tomatoes in, they’re pure meat.

I like Roma style tomatoes too, and have grown them several times in the past.
I have Amish paste tomatoes growing now, but have only picked a couple so far. Waiting for ripening!

We have a sort of second season here for tomatoes, you can put plants in in the late summer for a fall crop. Usually they’re a strain more adapted to the heat but they usually all taste like blah.

Our second season is for lettuce, peas, spinach and other cool weather crops like kale, swiss chard, and cruciferous veggies.

WSe can do that too, sorta, but the sunlight factor has to be done right or they vegetate until spring and then bolt.

Hi stella – as I do on most days, I read here and I think I’m going to try the pasta sauce suggestion. I’ve just done my general harvest for scads of cherry tomatoes (two varieties, both nice and edible right off the stem – but so many of them)
I’m not clear on what you mean by “carrot” in the list – just referring to the inclusion of a whole carrot in the roasting process?
I’m dense on these things – so all of this is roasted in the oven and then blended?
If more moisture is needed, just add a little water?
I’m really tickled that I go so many tomatoes. And I also just brought my garlic harvest onto the patio a couple of days ago, too – the process with garlic is digging them up (when they are ready) and letting them dry, still attached to the long, long stems (like 6′ tall) for a few days before separated the clove(s). So beautiful.
I have a pasta sauce recipe I really like but this just looks yummy.

Hi Sharon,
Carrot is a peeled carrot cut into small pieces so that it cooks along with the other veggies. Adds sweetness and color to the sauce. Cherry tomatoes are perfect. I have lots this year too. I don’t think you will need any water if you use enough oil, but keep an eye on it. I roasted mine in the oven at 375 for about 45 minutes, but watch to make sure they don’t burn.
I let it cool a bit, then removed the skins from the tomatoes, and blended everything with a stick blender, but a regular blender works too.
If you feel more comfortable with a recipe, here’s one from Martha Stewart that will give you a general idea about proportions. I’m sure I used more olive oil than she is calling for. Easy if you put all of the veg in a bowl, then toss them in the oil and seasonings:
https://www.marthastewart.com/337008/roasted-tomato-sauce
I use a sheet pan covered with foil, so cleanup is easy.
I think you’ll like it!

I consider most recipes as just a suggestion! I’m a pretty strict baker, but everything else is “just do it”! Tonight we had fried andouille sausage and potatoes with onion and courgettes. A one-pan meal with a salad, yummm. DH must have liked it, because I found an empty pan when I went to do the dishes!

Yup, if it’s totally strange I’ll try to follow the directions – and not my instincts – to get a baseline.
It’s like back in the 80s where the local paper decided to ask local chefs for info on how they cook red beans and rice. Only thing the recipes had in common was the red beans and the rice, from there they went all over the map.

LOL I didn’t know that. I watched those British make-over shows and they were always talking about aubergine and I didn’t know where that came from. Funny thing: a homeowner would say he didn’t like purple and they would say they were going to paint it aubergine and then the male homeowner would come in and call it purple.

I do exactly the same thing, If it is baking I follow a recipe (except for my own sour dough) and anything else is whatever my mood is. I can never actually follow a recipe after the first time, sometimes not even then.
And my family routinely moans when they really like something that we can never have it again because I can never duplicate anything.

Watching Trump get trapped into the Democratic gun control/pro-immigration trap. He’s decrying racism AND white supremacy. Note the importance of verbally separating two concepts, it make white supremacy a different category, making racism a lesser offense, a fuzzier concept and attributing a separate class of special hate to whites.
You may have noticed, if you spend a lot of time slogging thru the medis, that there’s been a movement to conceptually super glue guns to white supremacy. The idea is to make white supremacy a totally different and more villainous concept that plain old garden variety racism, and in process makes guns the symbol of white supremacy. If you are white and own a gun – you are a white supremacy advocate. If you are white and say anything positive about guns – you are a white supremacy advocate. If you are white and don’t support the abolition of private firearm ownership -you know the drill…
If this succeeds you will see it used as a lever to deprive the citizenry of other things the Left deems vital to their agenda. Don’t like open borders – white supremacist. Don’t like expanding public and decreasing private transportation – white supremacist. It will effectively do what progs have been trying to do for decades and make racism a totally white concept by generally accepted definition.

Well, you can think me a really kind person or a fool. I went to Walmart to pick up my groceries and then went to the gas station. A man pulled up and went inside and then came back out looking very worried. He noticed me watching him and asked if I could help. He was on his way to the VA in Tampa and didn’t have enough money for the gas he needed. His foot was in a cast, he had a military sticker on his car, and then he showed me the picture of his foot after the surgery. By then I was putting some gas in his car. He had spent 20 years in the Army. I thanked him for his service, he gave me a hug, jumped in the car and was on his way.
I figure even if he wasn’t telling the truth, I earned a couple points toward a star in Heaven.

When I worked in Santa Monica, CA our offices were across the street from Palisades Park just up the cliffs from the Pacific Coast Highway and the ocean. The park had a lot of homeless folk even in those days, but they couldn’t stay overnight.
One of the main boulevards leading to the park is Wilshire and there are a lot of both fast food and regular restaurants in the vicinity where the “better-dressed” panhandlers used to hang out. The restaurants were less likely to shoo them away if they weren’t disheveled. Generally I ignored their pleas for money, there being no way of knowing what they would spend it on.
One afternoon, though, I was walking by one of the fast food places and a young man in relatively clean clothing and carrying a backpack approached and asked if I could help him buy a hamburger at the outlet. Feeling strangely compelled, I handed him the money…whereupon he took my hand and kissed it with profuse thanks.
That’s got to be 30 years ago and I’ve never forgotten it.
