We went and ate today at a quaint neighborhood eaterie, nothing fancy but a rather blue-collar place with an eclectic menu. We started with a muffuletta eggroll and a crab and cheese eggroll that turned out to be crab rangoon and muffuletta in eggroll wrappers, both appetizers deep fried. They were quite good but by the time we’d eaten them they were so rich our appetites were on the edge of gone.

That didn’t stop us though, we soldiered on and ordered. I got an interesting plate with a shrimp taco, a crab/shrimp burrito and a pile of fried cheese grits with a seafood tamale on top. Czarina got a huge flour tortilla-wrapped pile of food (her memory will be better than mine, there’s a huge fat globule blocking my memory processes between noon and 3 PM). Oh yeah, it came with Cajun flavored fries, only thing that would have made them better was had they been battered and double-fried.

We’d heard about the place in the NOLA paper, as we were going to be down there anyway we thought that we’d stop by. We didn’t eat breakfast in anticipation of running barefoot thru the menu and, as it turned out, we didn’t need dinner either. We consumed enough calories in one meal to choke a hog, this was a real, pre-Katrina, NOLA working class feed. Thank heaven that there are restaurants in the outlying areas that been infected by the post-K nouveau cuisine snots that have rendered a lot of NOLA eateries snotty boring. We haven’t even scratched the surface of this new place, there are still dozens of fat and flavor filled new things, a wondrous forest of things that would make Oprah blanche.

I found their menu, the descriptions don’t do justice to the richness but imagine…

Don’t be surprised if someone posts, one day, that our bodies were found on the restaurant floor with huge smiles on our faces. Whatta way to go.

I don’t eat much seafood except for tuna and salmon, but I looked at that menu and there is a lot that looked delicious. I’m drooling while I am waiting for breakfast here.

And the menu doesn’t fully disclose the wonderfulness.

There used to be dozens of small restaurants in NOLA, many as part of Mom & Pop grocery stores. They’d cook great meals, homestyle, that were inexpensive, tasty and filling. Most would be traditional meals: peppers or mirlitons stuffed with ground meat or seafood, pork chops, homemade spicy spaghetti and meatballs – the stuff that NOLA families ate for decades but right there for lunch, dinner or carryout.

Katrina drown many, if not most, of them and they couldn’t come back. Now instead of real family food we have a sea of snot restaurants that push non-native food in small, expensive portions as if the exclusivity and snob-factor are more important than taste.

There are still more traditional fares where you can go wearing work clothes and get great food in a comfortable environment without getting gouged.

I used to work with a guy at Home Depot who once worked at one of the NOLA stores, back in the day (both for the Depot and NOLA – this would have been probably 15 years pre Katrina, at least). He talked about how hard they would work, then go to some gas station and get great big po boy sandwiches and beer and eat sitting on the street curbs people watching. IIRC he said five bucks would get you a great meal and a beer back then.

I worked out by the Lakefront in the early thru late 80s. These was a small family-owned grocery store by my office. T he family was Cuban and had a butcher area at the back where they made their own sausage and cooked it too. I’d get their hot Cuban sausage with jalapenos on French bread, a beer or a Barqs and sit out on the lakefront for lunch.

There was a place down the road that made double-fried french fried potato po’boys, dressed with lettuce. tomato and mayo – with homemade beef gravy if you wanted it.

In the other direction was Deany’s where they’d take a whole loaf of unsliced bread, hollow it out and fill it with fried shrimp or fried oysters – or both.
Then there was Whiteys down on Downman where at certain times of the year all he had was beer and crawfish. You’d sit at original iconic 50s kitchen tables and chairs with pitchers of beer and huge plastic sacks of exquisitely boiled crawfish…

Changing…demographics…and Katrina killed them but the memories linger.

I need you to recommend a nearby hotel. I think I am just going to go stay near that place for two or three days and eat there every meal. Hope they are open at least for lunch and dinner. I didn’t even make it to the plates before I wanted a dozen things. And I want every side, and all the fried platters too.

Maybe I should arrange a quadruple bypass for three days later. Maybe I’ll have digested everything by then? Good gosh, that looks good. And they also have shrimp and grits, one of my favorite meals. Don’t get it up here but I always look for a good place to get it if I am in the Lowcountry.

The grits I had with the pseudo-Mexican meal were GREAT. The roasted grits with cheese sauce and the tamale on top were killer. I’m a grits fan but these I’ll marry and take to Paris.

    5) 10 year old David Bowie ❤️

    6) Todd V. McMurty follows me on Twitter, he likes and retweets some of my legal observations. Given I don’t have a law degree this tickles me. Maybe not a big deal or even a sharable smile, but it makes me smile.

    7) 1970 wrought iron VW Beetle.

    8) Saudi Arabia has lifted restrictions on unaccompanied women being in public. Saudi women can now walk to the corner store, take their children to parks, feel the sunlight on their faces (burka, niqab and hijab laws are changing in some parts of SA also) without a male family member.

    Momentum.

    9) Fresh corn on the cob, soaked in butter and sprinkled with salt.

    10) I think I’m going to get this on a t-shirt.

I got an email just a little while ago. The couple who went last night to see the little doggie I want didn’t take him. I am trying not to get too excited…………….oh, well, that ship has already sailed. 🙄 But, me and my big mouth, told them we are going on vacation the first week in Sept. So, he would have to go into a kennel for a week. They don’t like that, but I don’t know if it will hurt. I just really think he is the right one for me.

Our Heavenly Father, Your children come to you tonight to ask for healing and peace throughout our country so that we may return to being One Nation Under God. Guide us to be leaders in Your Kingdom, spreading Your Love and Salvation to all. Forgive us our sins and deliver us from evil.

Lord, we ask for a blanket of protection over all our troops and law enforcement who serve to defend and protect us. Bless our representatives with the strength and wisdom they need to achieve the path You have chosen for us.

Please place Your Guardian Angels of Protection around Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their families as they seek to lead America back to You.

Grant us patience, Lord, as the evil ones try to anger us and cause us to fall.
Spread blessings over Israel and Netanyahu.

We humbly ask that You please comfort those who are grieving and in pain.
Thank you Father, for Your Love and the gift of Life.
